Poll Question
I am kinda sick of messing with cents. Although, now,I got like 50lbs of copper, that I cant do anything with. And after all the work I sure ain't gonna sell for a penny, to the bank.

I sure wish you would just take them to a bank and deposit them. This is the type of thing that inspires YN's to start collecting when they can find something in change that is worth, to them, a fortune. Way to many people just hoard old pennies (cents for those sensitive to terminology) for no other reason than to have a pile of Copper.

First.....I would much rather have a silver or gold horde than a copper horde, if I was to do that !.......50 pounds of gold would be awesome ! Ha Ha I buy "batches" of wheat pennies and IHP, but I've never really "roll searched" pennies with much intensity.....I may get a box this friday though, actually, with a box of halves. Really just for something to do rather than expectations of "hitting it big" or anything.....I'm sure I'll just find a couple of common date Wheats and nothing else....don't know if i'll take the time to look for varieties, double dates, etc..etc.. Just have yet to be bitten by the "copper bug" or even the "penny bug" yet I guess !

I never saw the point of hoarding copper cents. Do you also pull the wiring out of appliances and electrical cords before you throw them out?

Never picked up rolls of them to search, but I always get a smile when discovering a wheat or indian. And I always bend down to pick one up when I see it on the ground. Life is full of wonderful discoveries, both big and small. Oh, and I do collect copper wire. But there is no thrill in finding it....lol

Wow I am a little surprised at the level of ignorance on this thread. First of all, people are selling $50 face copper pennies on ebay for around $80-$90 (I know because I tracked these auctions for awhile). No they arent getting rich at it, but they are making a little money for their time of searching for wheats or other coins to fill their albums. Also, I really dont think I need to remind anyone that next year there will be new designs for the penny, and if the response is even half of what the State Quarters program did, then we could see alot of new collectors coming on board (and yes including those that will collect copper cents). Third, at some point the penny/nickel ban will ease and people will make money on those darn little things they put in their jars. Fourth, some speculate that copper cents could be traded like junk silver coins are today. No, they probably wont ever be worth what silver coins are but some are saying 5-10x face value in the future is a possibility. So why not save a few of these if you can get them for face value still? The worst case scenario by saving these? You have coins worth their face value so the risk is low, yet has some potential upside.

I'm not sure ignorant is the right word - everyone just has slightly different perspectives. I really like Carl's idea. Someday soon there won't be many wheats (or even copper cents) in circulation and kids just won't get into the hobby as much. Seriously, who can get excited about a pile of zinc cents. That said, I do hoard copper cents and I really enjoy roll searching. There's something about the thrill of finding a Wheat cent (or an IHC). I recently started a roll collection of each year and mint mark. The copper cents won't be around forever and having some of each date is probably a good idea, if for no other reason than someday I can give them to 50 young collectors. I've already started throwing back year/mint mark combinations that I've completed - it's too much to hang onto.

Yeah maybe ignorant wasnt the right choice of words but the points I made about the pros of hoarding them I will stand behind 100%.
Another reason to hoard them...if our dollar keeps losing its value, then the federal reserve notes we all have will less and less buying power or eventually become worth only the paper they are printed on. I'd rather have a pile of metal coins that have some intrinsic value versus worthless greenbacks.

I love coppers bring 'em on. Go to your great-great-great granddaddy and grandmammy's basement, and send me the 50#. I'll pay shipping and handling.

Well I feel a little better after finally sorting all my cents and scoring $100, with no trouble, at the bank. Maybe some rolls won't be so bad from now on. I guess I was just surprised at not finding anything before 1959. I do strip electrical wires and use them to bind all my used tinfoil.

Gotta love "Old Abe". What other coins offers as much availability as well as collectible options? You ca go to the bank and get a box that will contain copper, Wheats, old dates, huge variety options and a good chance to hit a home run. What else can you ask for? Jim

I only hate pennies in commerce. They are cumbersome and toxic and have no reason to exist.
The great as a collectible. Even the cents made since they should have been abolished in the mid-'70's are interesting and fun to collect.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
