Be allitle easier if you gave the purchase price, then I could open up my RedBook and make an inference.

I'd say F-15 for the 1908-S and VF-25 for the 1909-S. The '08 has the more natural color but the if the '09 was cleaned it isn't obviously damaged IMO. I wouldn't agree that ICG (or any other TPG) will "certainly" recognize cleaned coins. As just one example, ICG slabbed my 1837 half dollar that PCGS had previously rejected as cleaned. Sometimes their cleaning detectors seem to need a little adjustment! Anyway, nice coins, and it's great to get those 2 out of the way if you are working on a complete IHC set.

08-S: VF20 (due to clear separation of hair from headband-- using Rick Snow's guide--pdf) 09-S: VF30-35 (from what I can see, unless there's clear separation of the lower diamond ribbon from the lower hair curl, then EF40)

F15 for the 08-S. VF 30 for the 09-S. ICG has graded cleaned coins? Does the slab denote that?

I also would have to go with the 08S F15 and the 09S VF30. the light wood grain toning on the 09S is probably due to the planchet composition being improperly mixed, common among IHC's, and I kind of like it. If it has been lightly cleaned at one time, it appears to have done no damage. Very few distracting marks and nice color on both.

I'll give the grades later, but I'll just say that, according to ICG, some of you were a bit rough on the 08-S and some a bit lenient with the 09-S. I do believe they undergraded the 09-S though so that the cleaning could be netted in.

The "liberty" on the 1908 is rather faint, I'd put it in the F-range for that reason. The 1909 should be VF or thereabouts...

Keep in mind, you cannot grade on one diagnostic along (usually). Take a look at the reverse wreath. Take a look at the rest of the details and overall level of wear.

VF20 for the 1908 I'll go VF35 on the 1909
Nice coins Bruce. Those were the last 2 keys I got for my small cent series.
