The gold color means nothing. It may have been plated or painted before and most of it wore off. It does appear to be a War Nickel, though. That means it is 35% silver and worth a buck, probably.

Worth saving for the silver content. That gold plating or whatever detracts from the value.

Probably A thin layer of gold leaf was once applied to this coin and wear has left it the way it is now .
