Hi everyone! I'm new to all of this and was hoping someone could help tell me if I had a "special" 1965 quarter. I'm posting several pictures of it next to other 1965 quarters; this one has VERY thick lettering on the front (In God We Trust) and in the back appears to have less detail (looks sort of smudged?.) It just looks weird!

This coin weighs 5.76 grams; all of the others are 5.63-5.67 or so. Any help would be appreciated; I can post better pictures if necessary! (Coin is the center of the top row of the 6 coin pictures and the left of the 2 coin pictures.) I know they're not the best pictures; thanks in advance!

to the CCF!

I believe that 5.7 is within the mint tolerance for quarters. I may be wrong but that's what I tend to find when weighing quarters. The smudgy-looking lettering is from Die Deterioration (die wearing down after striking lots of coins) and circulation damage and flattening. Happy hunting!

On the quarter in question, do me a favor. Can you get a shot of the QU in QUARTER?

I can see Die Deterioration Doubling on the "Q" of "QUARTER". That's caused by a worn die issue. http://www.error-ref.com/die-deteri...on-doubling/

All of the Quarters you've shown are safe to spend, since they're normal.

Thanks for the closeup, nice photo too. I thought it may be the Type C reverse, but it appears it isn't. Keep looking and you'll find something soon!

First,

Others have already weighed in on what you are seeing with the coins. I just wanted to commend you for noticing the different appearance of the coins and for asking the questions. This is how we seek and find new things with coins and learn more about what we are seeing. Continue looking closely at your coins, and your eye will soon start spotting things of collectible interest. They are out there for the discovery!
