A friend needs to sell some coins she had in the family, and asked me to take a look. Since they're out of my area of knowledge, I wanted to post them here.

My thoughts inspecting them: at least some of the collection is fake. These were some that troubled me.

Things I noticed:

1. Overall condtion/luster high for aged coins from a non numismatist.
2. Graininess on surfaces indicate casting to me rather than striking.
3. Some details don't look right
4. Details not sharp in general, indicating casting.
5. Some had overlapping reeding, a red flag.

In this set were two 1906 Ellis Island coins, which were never minted, so that got my attention and made me inspect them more skeptically. I hoped a few from the set would be real and it would be a mixture, but I'm not very optimistic now.

All are counterfeits of Chinese origins.

All are fake, but I think the Trade dollar may be the best fake

Those are all bad. They all look like modern Chineseum fakes.
Just for future reference throw the coin on a scale and weigh it.
Then see if the coin sticks to a magnet.

These counterfeits are all of quite recent origin.

The Trade dollar may be the best counterfeit, but it is still a horrible fake.

Dunno. The fake 1804 reverse with a scared chicken hiding behind a sloppy shield is pretty darned creative.
