Let me know what you think. I find this to be a crusty original. It seems to be mid AU in all but luster. I can't discern any. This is excerpted from The Complete Guide to Mercury dimes by David W. Lange (a great reference btw). So either the luster just isn't evident via this lighting/angle, it it just isn't there and shouldn't technically meet the AU grade. What do you all think?

It appears to have the original surface, pulled from circulation not too long after.
I'd grade a AU-55 FB, on a good day it may grade AU-58 FB.
Toning can be distracting to other collectors, this depends on personal preferences. I don't mind putting this in my album.

I'll say AU-55, but the coin is on the dark side for me.

I strongly disagree . EF -45 Not FSB . macmercury I'm surprised you would consider this Merc for a possible AU-58 FB .

That's a beauty. AU-55FB and I agree it could go 58. At the magnification in this photo I still don't see a break in the bands.

the toning on this appears to me that it was exposed to some moisture or something over the years. personally I don't care for it. AU53 imo as the minimal amount of luster remaining. it has a shot at FSB but I'm a stickler for all 3 bands being separated and the bottom band appears to be impinged. going by the center band only then it probably pulls the designation

I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I believe this one can have FB, grading is subjective. The toning can turn other to lower the grade a point plus two, we don't always agree on the same term, this is the same way TPG average grades. If this were to get it grade at NGC or PCGS, the chance of getting FB designation is about 60%.

Thanks for the great feedback so far, this is helpful! Quote: I strongly disagree . EF -45 Not FSB Thanks T-BOP. Do you have a reference you typically look to for grading guidelines? I'm not sure I've seen this much detail and separation in the hairs directly below the wing on any EF. That is a high point region that I'll review and typically these hairs are worn nearly smooth on EF. Regarding the bands, here are a few excerpts from a couple of reference books as folks might find this interesting. Also, PCGS states in their grading standards that they only designate full bands on MS60 and above (see page 7) https://www.PCGS.com/Content/pdf/PC...tandards.pdfFor NGC, I inquired earlier this year and was told: " While it may not be stated on our website our policy is to FB Mercury dimes in the MS60-70 category." So this coin would never likely receive a confirmation of Full Bands from a TPG, it could command a small premium in the market. Personally, it does appear to be full bands to me (or pretty close to it).

Quote: Thanks T-BOP. Do you have a reference you typically look to for grading guidelines? I have to admit that I'm a purist when it comes to grading ,not saying it's right or wrong or even accurate . Now I know most members won't agree with me on a few of my calls but that Mercury dime has issues that I can't digest well . To me it's a blackish dirty looking coin , don't bash me just yet .The coin displays nominal wear on hair and wing, the 4 in the date is flattened by hit or wear , Axe blade on reverse displays a lot of friction and Bands while some might say are split I feel all 3 bands are not FSB . Bare in mind that this is solely my Honest opinions on said coin . So now you can tell me that none of what I said has anything to do with Grading . I can handle the rant .

Thanks for your honest opinions T-BOP, I wouldn't want anything less! Much of what you have noted pertains to eye appeal and I specifically asked about that (in addition to grade), so these comments are much appreciated. It sounds like you don't like the dark toning. I personally think it is interesting, indicative of an authentic coin (aka "crusty original"). But resale could be an issue if the market at large looks down on such toning. As for the flattened '4', my guess is this is due to the notorious peripheral weak strikes seen in many branch mint issues from the 20s. Overall though, this specimen seems to be generally well struck compared to others I've seen. 52Raymo - no, I haven't pulled the trigger yet on this purchase. I've actually just identified another 1924-D for sale, which is PCGS AU58. I just added a new post about comparing both coins here: http://goccf.com/t/362209

In my opinion, AU55 if they dont knock it down a few points for the darker toning.
