Found this roll searching, sure like the art work of this one. Note how smooth and not scratchy were the copper was removed.

Yes something gritty enough to remove the higher parts of the copper plating, but smooth enough to not leave behind much for scratches in the zinc. If @t-bop is wrong, then perhaps 800 grit sandpaper? For sure, this cent didn't leave the mint looking like this.

Cool find. I think it is deliberate, but cannot rule out a Dryer Coin.

When I worked in a large shopping mall, I would find coins like this. Kicked up and down the hallways and aisles removes the thin copper plating.

I have several of these across a number of years--mostly late '80s through the '90s. My best examples are in a Dansco generic cent album devoted to damaged Lincoln cents. Very cool.
