Came across a raw 1831 CBH on EBay that seems too perfect. I can't post the link with my IPad, but it is EBay item no. 313105399826. The strike is better than I have ever seen on a CBH. The fields are very clean. The touches of wear seem too heavy for the condition of the rest of the coin. It looks dipped, but not otherwise cleaned to me.
I don't have the expertise to judge whether my concerns are warranted.
So what think you, wise people? Is it a cherry or a lemon?

I don't know nearly enough about these coins to offer up any help. I only wish I had many more in my collection.

Looks very altered in terms of color and the surfaces. Nice detail. I think what looks like wear on the obverse in her hair is just from strike weakness and not rub. But its still a details coin and i'd stay away. I am no expert so I await what others say especially regarding the hair. I think the strike is actually good for this coin.

Definitely cleaned. Completely unnatural, dead look.

I agree. It just doesn't look right. That's why I wondered if it was genuine.
You both spotted it as cleaned, something I can have trouble with. I didn't see any hairlines or evidence of wiping, but I agree it doesn't look right. Lack of verdigris led me to think dipped and retoned. What is it that you saw?
Prior to the 1830s, striking of capped bust coins is often just awful. Many in the 30's are still pretty bad, but nice ones are not hard to find. This one seems exceptional. Full centrals on almost all stars, strong dentils, good detail elsewhere. This was a great coin before it was monkeyed with.

Surface texture is 'pasty' looking.
That leads me to thinking that it could be high pressure die cast, in much the same way that die cast zinc toys are made.
I would really need to look at this one in hand, close examination of the edge under high powered magnification required, and also consider if XRF testing may also be needed as well.

While with all the above, the seller does have good feedback and takes returns for 30 days, it's not an especially expensive coin, so it might be worth getting it in hand to see for yourself. It does have a cleaned look and like sel_69l says a very through examination is advised.

Agree it looks cleaned or overdipped with some early retoning. Looks like a nice early die state strike. I don't see anything that would suggest that it's not authentic, appears to be an Overton-103.

No slab; no interest.
At that catalog value I need it slabbed.
And I just looks unnatural.

I think we have a combination of cleaning, retoning, and deceptive photography.

Hard pass for me! Possibly cleaned and "enhanced" photos that don't show the true condition. Price is very high too.
