A true coin collector.
Keep it up! There are still many pre 1960 Jefferson nickels floating around. Take a closer look at your mintmark for a 1946 D over inverted D.

Not a bad buy for 5 cents but it is not silver, it is a copper, nickle alloy.
The last wartime silver 5 cent coin was in 1945.

I missed the comment about 35% silver. Silver content nickels have a Large Mint Mark over the dome of Montevello building.

Not silver. Like TNG said look for the one with the mintmark above Monticello.

Nice find, even if not silver. Hold onto it until a better one comes along.

Sadly it's not a D over inverted D that would have made that my first error coin but I'm still glad to have the 1946 D nickel in my collection....so far the oldest coin I have is my 1907 Indian Head penny from granny.... I made coin sleeves for my personal collection coins lol I don't now where to buy them so I just made my own I don't thank I did half bad 2 square peaces of plastic and 2 little square peaces of cardboard with a water bottle cap traced out and cut out with a knife.... I have yet to have them graded I thank I'll save that for a pro... Hers my coins in there home made sleeves
