I have an 1889 O Morgan.

I am brand new to VAM - where in the world do I start to determine whether this particular Morgan has any VAM's?

Is there a site that has pics and shows you what to look for? Or do you look for oddities and then try to find the VAM?

Thanks!

Here is a link to Vamworld 2.0. I would suggest browsing and studying for awhile before jumping in. On the left side you will see Vams by date/mm. http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...om/wiki/Home

A good beginning point on the VAM site is the Attribution 101 page.

Don't try to absorb too much in one sitting. Take it slowly, and work through the major distinctions first.

I'd recommend starting with overall illustrations and device descriptions, in section 1.2.

After that, take some time to work through these sections. First, section 1.3 (major hub types). Second, I'd go to section 2.2 (date position). Third, I'd work through section 2,3 (mm position).

Then take one date and mint combo with very few VAMs. Examine each listing, and see how it all fits together. A good one to start with is 1895-O. It only has five known die pairs, and the identifiers are a really good example of the different things to look for.

Hope this helps!

First of all all Morgan and Peace dollars have a VAM number assigned to them. A good way to weed down the possibilities is search by the date position for '89-O. You could also post full obverse and reverse images if you would like help...http://www.vamworld.com/wiki/1889-O_Obverses

Your Morgan is a normal date placement with mint mark possibly set left. I can't tell much beyond that as the images are very dark.
The hair lines appear to stop at the devices so it's a details coin.
