Out of curiosity, does anyone collect Australian predecimal coins by date spacings and alignments e.g. the multiple different date spacings/alignments of 1911-1914 florins? Or even catalogue the coins you do own by the date spacing/alignment of the example you have?

It seems like certain coins get more love on this front (1922 penny and 1952 penny for example) but plenty don't. There's a fair bit of documentation on the different alignment and spacings for all denominations and years regardless.

I personally don't collect by date spacing or record which spacing it is regardless of the coin or denomination.

I have 2 x wide date 1913 pennies and 3 x wide gap between 1 and 9 1922 pennies. So far.
I have only had a cursory search through 500plus pre decimal errors / varieties in my possession, using an old 9th edition Rennicks just to document dates etc and any obvious points of interest. My focus at the moment is on rehousing and restoring a badly kept main collection of all pre-dec denominations.
Once that is finished I will be heading back to the errors varieties to fully understand what I have there.
I didn't realise that there are so many wide date and alignment coins to be found.
Those early florins with this, welI I haven't heard of, but now knowing of my father's eye for a good error variety make me feel it is likely that I may come across some in the future.
Thanks for posting, I am glad I read your post and did a quick Dr. Google of this issue.
Later Mr T

Yeah it doesn't get mentioned in a lot of the catalogues. It's somewhat interesting but I don't think most of us can stretch to six nearly identical 1914 florins in our collections.

Now I feel guilty.....
I was fortunate enough to end up with 3 x 1914 London minted and 8 x 1914H Birmingham minted.
I know I have them, but I haven't checked any for date differences. I don't even know if it is the Birmingham or London coins that have the issue.... or both mints?

Here's my assortment of 1914's, Birmingham and London, good and bad, though there's probably no such thing as a bad 1914
Let me know if any have the date issue please.
Appreciated
and so it's 4 x 1914PL and 7 x 1914H

Words escape, that is a good group of 1914s. The 1914H's appear to have wider dates than the 1914. The second to last image of the very worn coin has a very narrow date.

Also a final note, maybe collecting date spacings on pennies may be easy , but doing this on multiple 1910s florins, just may be one very expensive hobby

Yes, I see what you mean. Also I think that same coin has a dropped 9, also in the first coin at the top.
Thanks Princetane

I believe it's only the 1914 London coins with different dates - see http://web.archive.org/web/20090420200614/http://www.triton.vg/F14.html for more information.

And my mistake, it's the 1919M florin that has six different date varieties - the 1914 only has two.

Dr Briggs in his publications notes that there are many different date alignments in early florins. Some can only be appreciated in Unc condition and for those dates you are looking at 4 figures (sometimes 5 figures) per coin.

Ah okay - I hadn't looked too closely at how precise the differences are. But yeah I imagine cost would put most people off.
