S-63 is one of the easiest 1794s to attribute by sight. it is called the "fallen 4" variety because of the low 4 in the date. it is a relatively common die marriage with a sheldon rarity rating of R-2 (501-1250 known). this coin exhibits a significant flaw in the planchet. this flaw occurred on the blank before the coin was struck.

Quite the planchet flaw indeed! Surprised the coin is still holding together after being struck and sitting around for 200+ years.

Very cool! The mint was so young and inexperienced and they had to rely on suppliers of planchets that were just as young and inexperienced. Pretty interesting period of US mint history! I too am surprised the whole coin is intact!

thanks nickelsearcher! I'm glad you are enjoying my posts.

i have plenty I can learn here. while I am pretty knowledgable about large cents, I dont know the key dates for Morgan dollars and I have no idea what the mint is making these days. I was shocked when I got a sally ride 2022 quarter in change a month ago. they changed the obverse!

Ha I didn't know that either, I man I knew the obverse was different, but Sally Ride? Cool I need to get one of them. I found out about the Hubble Telescope dollar way too late to order one, but typical fashion, I ended up paying less than the release price for one on ebay. LOL It's a beauty of a dollar I got the reverse proof.

I'm more familiar with early coppers and colonial coins now days than I was a couple of years ago. I'm just sad I took so long to get into them, now I can barely afford much of what I like and also why I collect books and knowledge primarily now.
