The sharper folks would have to confirm but it looks like a "finned rim". Read the first paragraph, in the link I have provided, about "Fins can develop on either face or both faces simultaneously. " Look at your reverse, in the opposing area, you will see finning again. They have both just laid over, with circulation.

Thanks @makecents. I see what you're saying. Looks like rim finning. That's probably the reason some parts are raised

RW1010, at best, I'm just a novice. That's why I started my sentence the way I did.

Without any reverse pics of this one and it being a totally different coin, I will let others help you.

No problem. I appreciate your help. I always say I could be wrong because that's simply the case. I don't know it all just saying what I see. This collar clash looks a little different to me

Thanks Dearborn. Since the 1st coin is being questioned I think the second coin is relevant. Same year same mint same variety. The side by side is to help determine what's there. I see the finning on the reverse but I think there's clashing on the obverse. Maybe I'm wrong but the side by side seems to match up with the reeding of the clash. Maybe a counterclash? I'm not sure

Well the first coin looks like a Rim Fin - and it looks that way because the fin slid past the reeded collar and caused that crenelated appearance.
The second coin looks like a collar clash.
2 different events from most likely different die sets. I say that is because once the hammer die strikes the collar - the collar's reeding is a permanent product of the clash and won't move around the coin. That is why I think that they should be separated. Even if they are from the same mint and quarter design. I see no comparison from one to the other. So having 2 different events on 2 different coins in one topic can sometimes create confusion. but this is your topic and you can control it the way you think it should be.
In any event, both of your coins are very interesting and thanks for posting them up for us to view.

Thanks for the detailed explanation Dearborn. I have never seen this type of anomaly so I'll say you and makecents are correct. I can admit when I'm wrong. Since you guys are the experts and I'm the beginner I'll go with your expertise. Looks like I was wrong for assuming these were similar and posting two different coins. I may have jumped the gun but I learned something in the process

Interesting coins and the first I've seen since joining the forum. I hope it is ok to jump in and ask does what he have add much value? I am not saying that was RW1010s intention of asking. Just another helper for me in sorting of my coins.
