1983 D, Possible Mint Mark Error?

There is a D shape turned counterclockwise to the final D mint mark.

Looks to be the start of split plating. Please always show us the entire coin, both sides. Thanks.

The obverse may be showing signs of die deterioration--can't determine unless we a have a full photo. That, combined with a hint of split plating, may account for what we see with the mint mark.

If it were a RPM, that area would be raised and enlarge the mintmark. This is not a RPM. For it to be a RPM, the mintmark would have to show two punchings.
