Found this coin in change yesterday. It's very ugly. I almost feel sorry for it.

My ? #1: Is the Obverse missing almost all of the copper layer? Note the area around the date being copper & shiny
? #2: what is all the rough surfacing on both Obv & Rev. Die Cud?

Enviromental damage, not missing copper plating and no Cud. That is zinc bubbles/plating debris.Check the glossary left side of page for Cud.

Cool thank you guys. I would like to learn more about Die Cud errors.
Any choice reading on this error type?
I did look for Cud in the left hand of home page as John 1 suggested but didn't find anything.
I may just need more guidance in the use of this website.

From the Glossary: Cud
An area of a coin struck by a die that has a complete break across part of its surface. A Cud may be either a Retained Cud, where the faulty piece of the die is still in place, or a full Cud, where the piece of the die has fallen away. Retained Cuds usually have dentil detail if on the edge, while full Cuds do not.

OK I found Numismatic Glossary now!
Thanks again.
Even after collecting coins now for 50 years, the whole ERROR thing is new to me and little overwhelming, BUT FUN!

If it was missing all or part of the outer the exposed area would be grey, not shiny copper. The zinc core is grey in colour.
