1916/16 buff!

What's the story on this one and the last?

"1916/16 buff!

The one I sold was acid dated, but done really nice. Since I have another one it was easy to let go. Then this on comes up for sale priced less than the one I just sold. So I pulled the trigger and bought it. Now I have 2 again.

Forgive my ignorance on the series - but my eye sees a Buffalo with the date worn away. What diagnostic makes this an overdate coin if there is no date?

This is not considered an overdate but a doubled die Obv. Yes the date will show dramatic doubling if not worn off but there are other pickup points that still show even when the date is gone. Some people will nic a date it. To bring back the date but that hurts the value by about 50%. All 3 feathers as well as the braids are doubled.

Thanks for the followup. It's plain after your comparable photo. Very interesting.

There must be many millions of dateless Buffalos out there. I wonder how many of them have been checked for this DDO?

Some months ago, a dealer gave my buddy $300 for an acid treated '16 DD that he found. They're out there .... Good find!
