Have always had decent experiences on eBay. Having said that, I only use eBay as a source for modestly priced items/lots. High value stuff I get only at coin shows or coin shops where I can examine coins in-hand. Yes, avoid Esty.
Before buying, do your homework--know what to look for and what to avoid. Purchase only from established sellers who use high quality photos and have impeccable feedback.

Avoid Etsy and AliExpress, too many fakes IMO. There are also fakes on eBay but major well known dealers have stores on eBay and honest individual sellers too. I buy from smaller eBay stores with option to return if there's a problem. Major dealers have their own online stores, SD Bullion, Liberty Coin, APMEX, Bullion Exchanges, JM Bullion, Monument Metals to name a few. It's wise to shop around, compare prices and watch for sales, they usually have weekly sales.

@jk109e4, I like collectorscorner.com as I've found a few dealers through the listings there that I now do regular business with. Quote: Major dealers have their own online stores @livingwater, before making any eBay purchase I always check to see if the dealer has an online store, as you can often purchase the item there for a 10% or more discount than if you purchased it through eBay.

@hokiefan_82 Yes, I like to check eBay and dealer online sites. Sometimes the major dealers have cheaper prices on their eBay store than their own online store. For example just now APMEX 2023 1 oz gold eagle on their site is $2,144.69 check/wire but on eBay APMEX lists it for $2,114.69. Don't know why but maybe due to competition from the other eBay dealers. Also, big sellers on eBay may get fee discounts for volume sales.

Depends what you are looking for. The only dealers I have shopped online with are speciaists, such as Brian Greer, David Kahn, David Perkins, and Sheridan Downey.

I've always "avoided the middleman" and gone straight to the dealer websites. Civitas Galleries and FORVM Ancient Coins are two US-based dealers I regularly purchase from.

Most of my coins are from EBay. I Live in a town with only one coin store and it closed down so I have to use the internet. Be careful when buying key date coins. I always buy slabbed key dates because there are a lot fakes. Always remember, when the price is to good then it probably isn't real. The last month I bought BU ASE on eBay for $25. The seller used stock photo. The seller had a lot of good feed back so I bought it. When I received it, it looked fake and I also have a Sigma precious metal verifier. I got my money back and reported them.

For European coins I suggest MA-shops, vcoins, and Delcampe. For world coins I suggest Fallmouth Stamp & Coin, Allens Inc, dnecoins, and Bob Reis.

One of the places that seems to be missed in the listings is on This Forum.
I have obtained some very good deals just by looking at what the members have for sale.
