Is there a safe way to clean coins that are absolutely disgusting? I have some that look literally like "crap" or mold. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Start with Acetone. From the hardware store. Just be careful to use glass or something of that sort. Something with a lid, is even better.

Acetone will not damage your coins. Anything more vigorous will damage them.

You can also use Xylene, but be careful using either. You can also use Verdicare. There are a few things you can do to remove crud without destroying the patina or removing metal.

Thank you so much! I will try the acetone as I believe we have some out in the garage.

Forgot to mention - no scrubbing or rubbing! Just soak them in 100% acetone.

If you use a jar (such as an old used but cleaned pickle jar), the lid will have a thin rubberized seal that goes over the rim of the jar - this seal will dissolve from the fumes of the acetone and drop into the jar adding impurities to the solution. (that is bad for coins) For a solution for this problem, I place aluminum foil over the jar, then put the lid on pot of the foil to seal it up. I found out this by personal experience.

Thank you so much for the extra tips... I wasn't sure how to start, so this was perfect. I am guessing I just place them down afterwards and let them air dry? Or can I pat them dry?

Air dry, blow on the coin and it will evaporate right off.

No need to blow on them you may leave droplets. Acetone will dry in a matter of seconds
