Is There A Safe Way To Clean Coins?

There are a few things you can do to remove crud without destroying the patina or removing metal. If you use a jar (such as an old used but cleaned pickle jar), the lid will have a thin rubberized seal that goes over the rim of the jar - this seal will dissolve from the fumes of the acetone and drop into the jar adding impurities to the solution. (that is bad for coins) For a solution for this problem, I place aluminum foil over the jar, then put the lid on pot of the foil to seal it up. I found out this by personal experience.
