I wonder if it's the same Moffat family as the one behind the Moffat railroad/water tunnel in Colorado (from Rollinsville to Winter Park). The latter was David Moffat, 1839-1911, important Denver financier and railroad baron.
Not surprising about it being found in France; New Orleans and France were likethis back then... lots of nice U.S. Gold of all Mints have been purchased from French coin dealers.
These are S.M.V. (Standard Mint Value) private $5 gold pieces minted out of California nuggets and gold dust from 1849 & 1850 for the Pioneer West.I believe Moffat & Co. also minted ingots as well. Beautiful coin! Congrats! I regret selling my VF20 piece years ago. I want to replace it one day. Beu
