Poll Question
Or more specifically--are 3/4 portraits of our presidents flattering? What got me thinking was seeing a remarkable 3/4 portrait on an ancient coin at a recent show:  Obviously, it looks good because of high relief. So how does this compare?  What do you think?  To make this easy, here are a three distinct options. Feel free to add more in comments.

I do agree that they look like tokens. There are so many minted that I don't think collecting circulated coins will attain much numismatic value. However, I think the U.S. needs to start using one dollar coins again(maybe even 2 dollar coins) to replace paper. We are one of the only countries left that used paper for less than $5 denom. I think one design would be better than 44 different ones.

The 3/4 view is nice in concept but is terrible for low relief coins. That ancient(Greek?) coin shows how nice the view can be if done properly. Unfortunately, the high speed presses that the Mint uses are not conducive to high relief coins so that is why everything is flat nowadays  I do not think the Pres dollars look too tokeny but on the other hand, those new Native American dollars with no date on the obverse... |

I think they might look better if they were done in silver, the gold tone makes them look like tokens.

I like them but feel they should be 1 or 2mm larger in diameter. A full 28mm would be about perfect.

I personally was looking forward to these when they were announced...then when they actually got here I was disappointed in the overall effect the coin had on me. I also thought they were more like tokens than money.  While I decided I would still collect the series, I decided not to worry about getting each mint mark. PS I also decided to give George a secret service makeover and use him for my avatar |

But compared to classical ancient Greek coins, modern coins rarely look good. Ancient coins didn't have to pass through vending machines, and didn't need to be stacked up in piles or made into coin rolls. So the die-cutters could afford to go all 3-D like that. Three-quarter profile busts do look more "lifelike" than either facing or side-view portraits, but they just don't translate well onto a modern, low relief coin. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I think they are ok, but the general public still doesn't even know about them in many cases, and I have a feeling they will go the way of the SBA's. They will become change at the train station when you buy a $5 ticket with a $20 bill and get a pocket full of clanking coins that only annoys people! |

I guess it depends on the the president that is on the coin whether or not the coin looks good or not |
