My niece just phoned me about an incredible find. She said a neighbor was throwing a bunch of stuff in a dumpster because they were moving. My niece went dumpster diving and pulled out a small samsonite suitcase. When opened it contained some old photographs and much to her surprise, two gold coins. Both $2 1/2 gold Indians (1915 and 1927). I'm waiting on her to send me some pictures.

There's no telling how many coins have been trashed by accident over the years. Great story & great find by your niece.

I could see people throwing away pictures but I doubt they meant to throw away gold coins.

You need to make sure whoever it belongs to can identify it and not just say, "Mine!" Today, that is easier said than done.  |

It is another reason to always check the stuff you throw away. Check the boxes, the suitcases and the envelopes.

My understanding is that the people who moved and threw everything in the trash had collected all sorts of stuff from toys, coins, pictures, ceramics, art and all sorts of collectibles. My niece just happened to confront the neighbor when they were throwing things out. The neighbor invited her into the house and told her to take whatever she wanted. Mostly vintage toys new in box and also told my niece to check the dumpster with stuff she already tossed. My niece claims that she hauled away thousands of dollars in collectibles and her neighbor was happy to see the items go.
