So, I have not been able to get cents for quite some time locally but my mother-in-law has hooked me up a couple of times where she has a business and lives in a rural area. The most recent hook up was a $50 bag, which I was really fired up about but then discovered there was moisture in the bag and moldy cents. I have spread them out on paper and we run our AC pretty much all the time this time of the year so I'm sure that will help but not sure how to handle the countless moldy cents. Any ideas?

You could soak them in a big roster pan full of Acetone for a few days if you want to search them - or just take to a bank that has a counting machine and cash them in.

Marv's suggestion is a good one. I'd like to add that if you're going to handle and search moldy cents, I'd wear gloves.

with Marv. But it doesn't need to be for days - a few hours would be sufficient.
By the way, I have several of those roaster pans in various sizes. They're great for cooking, as well as many other applications.

Don't know if its mold or fungus, why not dip a ladle full of them into boiling water? I've never done it, wondering how the patina would hold.?

A rinse with boiling water won't hurt them. But absolutely do not use any soap or detergent - those chemicals are usually acidic and will adversely affect the color of the cents.

It's just because I would forget all about it and take me a few days to remember.........

Well luckily (or unluckily) I can blame it on brain damage from when I got ran over by 2 cars when I was a kid, not for something I actually did like drinking or smoking weed...........

I had a similar challenge with about $30 in cents a few years back. I was short of acetone and used 91% isopropyl alcohol--soaked overnight (covered), rinsed the next day in distilled water. Overall, good results were obtained.

I don't know where y'all are buying acetone.
But at $13/quart or $27/gallon (prices I'm seeing), that route seems pretty pricey for such a large number of Cents.
Plus, it's highly volatile. Unless contained in something closer to air-tight than a roaster pan, it wouldn't last long. [and it's highly flammable].

I thought I'd found a neat solution for coins with a small glass storage container with a clip-top glass lid. Even with its silicone seal and tightly closed, the little acetone molecules managed to escape, though it took a few weeks.
