Poll Question
It seems like the whole forum has type set fever! Everywhere you look there is a post on type sets, myself included. I love it I am interested in seeing where everybody pans out. Feel free to post the answer you chose and why, I am interested in your take on this.

I think that's it I can't wait to finish just to think all the history I will be holding in that one album and imagining who could of held those coins.

I think it would be hard to lose interest in a type set because every coin is different. I know I have said it many times before but for those that don't know I used to collect Morgan VAM's only (specifically 1878 VAM's) and really got burnt out after having the #1 registry set on NGC registry. I bought a Dansco7070 just to mess around with and it lit the fire under me again with coins and even though I haven't added to it for awhile (because of trying to restore a car with my son) I still love to take it out and look at it more than any of my other coins in my collection

I have one hole left to fill on my 7070 - the 20 cent piece. I was recently able to acquire Draped Bust and Classic Head Large Cents in nice looking Good+ condition leaving me with just a single hole to fill. Since it is a VF/XF or better set, the Large Cents will eventually be upgraded, but this gives me some time as these two will be very pricey (and hard to find) in VF or XF. After the 20 cent piece is acquired, there's a few coins besides the large cents I'd like to upgrade. It will probably never officially be "done". Ken

i love the type set style of collecting but I really dont want to put the money that is needed into a 7070 built my own 20th century set and I have the idea of building one w/ all the countries that have Queen Elizabeth on the observe and I am thinking of a coin zoo type set as well
so I cant really vote on any of the options

I initially got into coins through the Lincoln Cent. It was a lot of fun, but I'm with Bryan on this one. Eventually they all started looking the same. Though it is great to get a key date to add to the set, I started to realize that they all looked the same. And though the penny's were cool, they arent that much different than what I see every day. I started getting into coins that I thought had exceptional eye appeal and also had value outside of numismatic value(economy fears partially drove that). This is what lead me to purchasing classic gold, which is still my main focus of interest. I immediately took to the type set mentality, since a complete set of any classic gold coin would be quite an ordeal. This branched out into other type stuff as I also became really fond of classic coins with natural toning over mint luster....all leading up to me going the type set route. :-)

Quote: What are you all restoring? I guess restore was a harsh word, we are actually rebuilding a 89 camaro RS. It had a 305 in it and we are rebuilding a vortec 350 to the same specs Popular Hot Rodding built their sledge hammer Vortec to here http://www.popularhotrodding.com/en...k/index.html . we have the original engine and trans out and have the the engine compartment repainted anddetailed. The trans is at the transmission shop getting beefed up and are currently awaiting a few more parts to put the engine back together (the bottom end is finished) then once all of that is finished we are going through suspension and brakes and all that stuff so not a total restore since it really didn't need it but a definite freshening up and upgrading

I guess I am in the majority here by choosing "Have started a 7070 and working to fill every hole!"My 7070 started in the 1990's when a dealer suggested it to me, knowing I had a good start already (I had already accumulated some type coins that were hiding in other Dansco albums, like a Morgan and Peace dollar in my Eisenhower album, two commemorative half dollars in the Kennedy album, and several duplicates in other albums). I have not really worked on it lately, other than casual looking at coins shows. The last thing I added was a 1905 IHC I got from Kurt last year. 2001 was the last really active year. I added my 1833 Large Cent, 1859 IHC, 1857 Seated half dime, 1841 Seated dime, and an 1853 Seated dime with Arrows. I am down far enough on the list where I feel the need to really research what I am buying, so I expect this to take a while.

Also have a 7070 and working to fill every hole. I guess the best way to describe my effort is that I have a hard time leaving my local dealer empty handed! While he doesn't always have a Mercury dime or Buffalo nickel that I need, I can almost always find something to fill a hole in the 7070. It's fairly easy to find coins now, but as the album fills up it'll become harder.

I've never been particularly fond of the idea of storing coins in a coin book/binder/[your favorite term here] as I worry about allowing that much exposure to the air. Of course, if serious collectors do it it's almost certainly harmless, but I'm just so much more accustomed to individual cardboard flips for my coins that I'll probably never change.
That said, if I ever were to get an album, I'd already be a good way toward my type set, as during my teenage years I had established it as my goal to try and get at least one of every coin variety ever made. Most of whatever I'm missing is 1793-1809 range coins of all denominations and almost all higher-denomination gold. In the absence of available early coins in my area (I have an AG 1798 cent, that's it), I'm currently working (slowly) toward getting a variety of gold.

I have one, and I am currently working on every hole. Just got a 1865 3CN yesterday. I want the entire last page in proof, so far all that's left is the sac. and the silver eagle. Other than that, no proofs. Also, I'm down to the "expensive coins" so it will be a slow process. I've had more fun with this set than any other so far.
