Hello, The other day I got a roll of Kennedy half dollars to search through. Every single one was 1998P - I am guessing this roll was made in 1998 and no one looked at it since. One of the coins looks perfectly fine except for the date- the two nine and the P are barely visible - they are very smooth. What would cause this? The rest of the coin is is good condition - it does not look like it was circulated much. Is this of any interest to folks who collect errors or is this sort of thing common? Here is the picture: I know basically nothing about error coins, so any information is appreciated. John Paul Edited by John Paul 10/05/2009 8:13 pm

A picture would sure help, but sounds like it could just be a filled die if the rest of the coin looks good.

Hi John, Looks like you have a struck thru grease error. Grease was trapped between the die and the planchet thus causing a weak strike lack of detail in that area. Good find!

A have never even heard of a grease strike through error but you explanation certainly makes sense to me. Would this identical error occur on a bunch of coins struck on the same die? Is it rare? Do folks collect them like they do double die and other types of errors?
Thanks,
John Paul

Do people collect them, yes. Are they valuable, by no means. They are one of the more common struck thru errors. Still collectible. Struck thru cloth like this one, are more uncommon and worth substantially more. Then you have struck thru embedded wire or staple that are very cool.

There is a die crack flowing from the jaw to the rim. Interesting, just not worth a lot either.

I noticed the line from the jaw to the rim - how can you tell it is a die crack rather than just a scratch?

A crack in a die forms a raised line on a struck coin
