In a previous post I got some really good input on value/price of VAM's. I think I do really need to study more on VAM's, it is sort of impossible to put a price on something .. when I don't even know what it is. Bryan1315 was right on the date of the coin I have been looking at, and the coin shop was nice enough to let me bring the coin home to study, before making a purchase. I hope the pictures are good enough for you all to help me figure out what VAM this coin might be. Obverse Date B in pluribus Obverse die clashes Reverse

look at the VAM-5 if its a broken S. I can't see it very well in the pictures but that is the only one I know of with the broken S

I have been looking at VAM world for over a hour now I don't think it is a vam5 or VAM 19 It does look like the mint mark on the vam5, but does not have some of the other die markers, or do you call them PUP's. For example says it should have 5 gouges in ear, but it is smooth inside the ear. Maybe it is just something else in the MM, like a die chip. Do the die clash have anything to do with what VAM it is. I read that die clash marks wear off with use. For me, seeing the leaf's on the obverse (from the reverse wreath) is very cool But I am not seeing any VAM's mention this so far. I think I can see the "M" above the "d" (in god we trust) Should I be looking more at the date?

I really don't think that it is O over anything...... Looks to me like the mm is not tilted, but possibly set slightly left.... I also think that concentrating on the clashes may be in vain..... 'Any' die could have the same clashes in the same locations.

I am leaning towards VAM 17B Seems to have some of the same die gouges - On the Y in liberty - near the die crack on Liberty's cap And the die cracks seem to be the same

I was thinking this was a 1882 O/S because there does seem to be a little something inside the MM that is something like the broken S variety (VAM5)
I do not think that now
There are at least 4 dies cracks that, to me, look just like those of the Vam17b.
So now what, the coin shop is asking $110 because they are thinking this is a O over broken S
Now I am back to what would be the value of this coin.
Also they have this listed as AU for grade .. what do the experts think the grade would be?

dead lock on VAM 17B no doubt, and the die crack at the you is a key PUP with those other cracks

I would add there is a lot happening on this coin, If you are interested in the coin, go back to the shop and if you have a relationship with them, I feel this is true, being they let you take the coin home before the purchase, and talk to the people there, be honest and fair, do your home work and KNOW what you have, grade included, and discuss the asking price and start what I would call a long mutually serving , pleasant relationship, good luck, Mike...

you also said in the other thread that it was marked on the 2x2 as an "O over broken S", I would also show them that their attribution is wrong and that it is not an o/s variety. It may help with the pricing of the coin because the O/S is a popular variety that allot of people look for, which makes its price go up. I don't know what they are asking for this coin but an O/S in this condition would be worth more than a 17B in the same condition

Thanks for the replies. I have learn a lot from this coin, and all your responses in both post dealing with this coin. I really like this coin because I can see the four different die breaks and many different die gouges. Also the die clashes. Once I found the correct link on VAM world I knew it was this coin. The owners of this coin are going to take a look at what I showed them and hopefully come up with a fair price. I hope turn out what Bryan1315 is saying, that the price should not be what they are asking when they were thinking is was O over broken S. zeewool .. thanks for the thumbs up. I wasn't sure what areas would end up being important when I posted the pictures ..

Any chance there is a letter transfer of the letter"E", under the tail feathers, I have NOT heard of this date with a letter E clash, but this coin exhibits plenty of things happening..?

I have an early die state of this and No E and it is surprising that it is not there. But there are a few out there that have very strong clashing on top of the bonnet and no E

Not seeing a "E" but not sure where it would be. I think I see the "M" above the "D" in god Here are a couple more pics - tail feather area - die crack from rim, through the "U" to Liberty - die crack on cap and into the field, with die gouges on cap and on "TY" of liberty.
