Got this one from ebay - another blurry picture purchase.

1909-S-Lincoln

It was sold as VG, but it looks more like an F to me, but I'm no pro. Kinda concerned about the surface too - the pics make it look ten times worse, but what I thought was just "wood grain" is kinda scaring me. Opinions?

I'd say VF20.

The slight wood grain you see is pretty common on the 1909-S.

I'd say F15
The woodgrain is normal...its a very attractive coin.
The S is bothering me slightly. Lets see what BadThad thinks.

The position or the little blob next to it? I think that's verdigris - there's a tiny bit in a few more places now that I look. There's also a little dimple near the bottom tail of the S. Unfortunately, this is the best closeup I can do.

The shape. Now that I see the closeup (nice pic BTW), I am leaning toward legit. These mintmarks were all punched by hand so the positions can vary. I was concerned about the shape.
Great looking coin. A keeper ;-)

Very nice 09's. I'm thinking VF25, with a good mintmark.

VF-25, the location of the S is troublesome, I don't think I've ever seen one in that position. It's about the same place as fake S-VDB I have, however, it does appear to be the correct style.

You have guts buying a raw, key date Lincoln on ebay. It's something I would personally NEVER do. If it's genuine, I'd say it's a very nice coin. I see no problems with the surfaces. I'd get it slabbed ASAP to make sure that MM wasn't added. Then again, I can't see somebody going through the trouble to add a MM on a non-VDB 1909.

I was evaluating a 1909-S that was on ebay and it had the mintmark in a similar position. I cross-checked against some pictures from Heritage (coins.ha.com) and found a certified example with the MM in the same position (under the zero of the date).

It's a risk for sure and I wouldn't dream of buying an SVDB or 14D raw, but I got this one for $75, so if I have to learn a lesson it won't be THAT bad. Seller has good feedback and a 7 day return policy so I thought I'd chance it. If it were yours would you return it or keep it and get it slabbed? I've got a few Ikes (FEVs) I wanted to holder so I thought maybe ANACS - especially since I'll just be breaking it back out again.

Maybe the VDB fell off :)

KenKat is it this one?

I am not sure of the exact one I found on ha.com but that one shows the mint mark in the same spot as yours I think.

Nice detective work Ken! That's exactly what I do when in doubt, ha.com is a valuable resource.

I'm a bit more confident seeing a similar coin in an ANACs holder. Still not 100%, but I'll risk it for now I think. Thanks guys!

i think you got a good deal too......i love the pre '20 lincolns. thinking abt breaking up my set and sending some of them in to be slabbed, but having a tough time as I put almost all of it together before I turned 15 so its got a lot of sentimental value.
