You are not going to get the answers you seek from the members of this subform. We are commemorative experts but not error coin experts.

Go back to my most recent comments -there I have laid out a pathway for you to get this coin in front of true error experts.

If you choose to go that route, use the Report to Staff link at the bottom of any reply to ask the Mod dudes to move this thread for you.

To be clear, there is no separate V/E forum for US Commemorative and NCLT coins...

Forum: US Commemoratives and Non-Circulating Coinage (NCLT) Including Grading, Varieties, and Errors

However, I am going to move this to the US Modern Variety and Error Coins sub-forum to get those eyes on it.

I'm firmly in the error camp.

The obverse clearly shows what looks to be a tilted die issue. Notice the secondary rim feature that runs most of the way around the obverse from K3 to K10.

There's weakness in the strike, particularly at Olympiad on the obverse and Dollar on the reverse. Their position in regard to the rim feature, essentially at the opposite pole from the strongest direction of the tilt, furthers the tilted die theory.

I'm not as sure about what caused the secondary reeding and the split, but am leaning towards a partial collar error of some type. I'd defer this opinion to someone with more knowledge and experience than me.

Most likely the reason it fell out of the container when you first opened it is because it never fit into it properly in the first place given the issues (which also strongly suggests a mint origin for the error).

I think it's a super cool find.

Appreciate that jbuck.

What the OP needs for this interesting coin is true error experts - and they hang out here in this sub forum so I'm hopeful someone with the powers to call Mike Diamond lights up the Batman sky symbol.

I'm with HGK3 for all the reasons mentioned.

I'll also add a question. Aren't proofs struck more than once to make sure the details are strong?
If they are, why couldn't the coin have "bounced" onto the collar during the second strike, creating the partial collar?

Yes, HGK3, I agree. I measured the diameter of the coin (should be 1.5") and I am getting 1.55 to 1.56. Don't really know if that is significant - Mike G

If this is a Proof coin, it maybe a partial collar on the first/second strike. Thus it would be a mint error on a proof coin. (rare) I mentioned first strike as the second strike shows a full rim on the edge of the coin. First time I've seen this before.

This appears to be a centered double strike, with the first strike in-collar and the second strike with a tilted partial collar error along part of the edge. The coin's diameter should be slightly greater than normal.

Thanks Mike for weighing in. Hopeful that the OP now has closure on this genuine mint error.

Thank you Mr. Diamond for your post!

I also would like to thank all, who participated in this thread, for their opinions and help getting this mystery solved.

As HGK3 stated, I too find it a super cool find. It clears up something that has bothered me for over 39 years. Of course there is the matter of the tarnish caused by my mishandling of the coin upon delivery. . Can't deny it was me as my fingerprint is on the coin.

I now am wondering what the coin might be worth and would appreciate any help with that. Thanks Mike G

@Guitar I would try to scour the net and YouTube for the terms that Mike D used to describe your coin. You might also be able to do a search on Great Collections or Heritage Auctions. But don't leave us hanging here when you find something out! Hahha. Good luck!
