I just won a very high grade copy of a somewhat scarce contemporary counterfeit variety. I know of 6 of these coins in different collections but to date this is the best to surface for sale.

Nice---High-Grade-Contemporary-Counterfeit-8R

The coin appears to be off metal (possibly German Silver high in copper). The coin may have been struck in a rocker press accounting for the weakness in the lettering. I will know after it arrives.

Rocker presses were small presses that could be easily hidden from authorities unlike a bid screw press so they were favored by some forgers. The drawback was that the low impact strike on GS does not strike up well. So multiple pressings are required - each stretches the coin a bit making the die fail to line up exactly with the first image. The result is often a multiple outlined image.

This type of counterfeit is in my opinion the Cream of the Crop. It is a fantasy looking nothing like an original - the dies were engraved and there are NO test cuts visible in the picture. I own one of this variety already but mine is far worse with test cuts. This is the first time I have seen clear feathers on any part of the breast of the eagle.

I am hopeful that with these details visible here, I will be able to link it to another counterfeit type or family.

Nice find! Congratulations.

It would be interesting to hear about silver content after you get the chance to do a SG test. Also interesting if you can establish approximately when it was made.

Nice find, Bob! This one must've never entered circulation to lack any test cuts or wear.
