A flat tire cost a coin collector more than just a tire Sunday morning as a thief stole thousands in collectible coins from his pickup truck, according to Philadelphia Police.
The 54-year-old man was on his way to a Trevose, Pa. coin show when he got a flat tire on his GMC truck.
He stopped at the Sears Auto Center at Cottman Avenue and Kindred Street in Northeast Philly, cops said.
He went inside to inquire about the tire. When he came back out about 10 to 20 minutes later his passenger window was broken out and two bags containing about $50,000 worth of collectible coins were gone, police said.
There was no immediate word on a possible suspect.

That's terrible and I feel sorry for the man.
One thing I learned a long time ago is NEVER leave things out in view . Always put valuables in your trunk or take them with you. If that was my vehicle I would have put them under the seat or taken them in with me.

When I buy coins or a box of coins it always goes under the seat of the truck. At least it can't be seen.

What a shame! I hate hearing stories like these...I wouldn't leave $10 in plain view much less $50,000 worth of valuables in a front seat of a car. I hope this gentleman was insured and will proceed with more caution in the future when transporting valuables.

Sorry, but I don't feel bad for this guy. First off, after 10-20 minutes. Come on, how easy were these coins to see? Was their a sign on the side of the car saying the car was holding that kind of cash or something. How on earth would someone know what was in the bags and break into the car to steal them? The stuff was in clear view of the windows, and obviously it was easy to know what was in the bags, or I doubt anyone would just chance that there was something good in them. People hide their purses out of view in cars, like under their seat or in the trunk. How much is in an average purse? 100 dollars. This guy had over 50K worth of stuff, unbelievable. I would have been transporting my coins in my trunk, strapped down somehow so if I got into an accident the valuables wouldn't pour all over the freeway like a story I read not too long ago. Carelessness right from the get go. Sure if putting the coins in your trunk is too hard for you, because then you need to lift the coins out then you might need to put the coins in your car on the seat, but when you walk away from your car? Man something would need to give. He was asking for it. at least toss a blanket over them or something

That sucks - I hope they catch the SOB that did that. Yes, the person with the coins in the car should have taken better precautions, but it still sucks.

How about the Death Penalty for coin thieves. Anyone second that? Also, be very wary of a flat tire on your vehicle, and look around. There may be a bad guy(s) who want something you have, or want to do harm to you. There's a movie coming out next year called the "Iceman". That was his favorite tactic - causing a flat tire then, look out! The Icemam promo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDPt...ture=relatedIceman audio book - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I029rcmzgk

I sincerely hope the coins at least belonged to a dealer and that he was insured. Meaning mostly that the coins didn't have any sentimental value to him. It's likely this is the case driving to a coin show with that much.
I could never replace my own collection with any price, but stolen items for sale...with insurance is just a headache, nothing more.

I have heard of this happening twice in the past, one man stopped with friends and repaired it without incident, another stopped and was mugged at the side of the road. It's getting common enough that dealers should have liquid flat sealer put in all their tires, at the least.

Very sad this happened, but why on earth would you leave items of that kind of value in plain view? Hopefully they recover the coins and put the thief (or thieves) in jail, but also I hope the guy is smarter about things the next time around. I don't leave anything of value in my car unattended. That's just asking for trouble.

Typically if you leave valuables in view and unattended it is considered negligence and the insurance won't pay off anyway. Locked in the trunk out of view maybe but not in plain view. And it says he was going TO the show, so it isn't a case of being followed from the show. Possible attempted insurance scam?
