I went to a coin shop this morning and picked up this FEC. It was very bright and stood out from all the rest. I asked the dealer if it was cleaned and he said it looks like it was polished. Under a loop, I didn't see any scratches or brush marks so how was this cleaned? Dipped? Also, what grade and value would you give this? This is my first FEC and I am happy regardless. It looks good in my collection. Thank you Edited by LTMets44 10/16/2011 5:41 pm

Cleaned = very yes, unless it's plated. Not sure about condition due to picture - could you shift your lighting? Or is the coin truly this color? If so it may have been silver plated, which for many collectors would ruin the coin completely.

I took about 30 pictures of this coin. Inside, outside, with different lighting and this is the best that I can come up with. The coin is a little darker in person. It is lighter than the other ones that I have seen but not a silver color. I would say it is closer to the color of a President Dollar.

Sounds like it's been dipped then. :O Still a nice coin. I've always like the FECs...

Maybe these pictures can help with the color.

My best judgement is that this coin was dipped. The new pictures look even more so, IMO.

What would you guys grade and value this as? How much would the dipping effect the value? The guy at the coin show that I bought it from has a shop not to far from me. I would like to see if the price he gave it to me was fair. I will judge this purchase to see if I would ever make a trip to his shop.

Appears to have been replated. By what, ? Looks to be VF details, value...maybe $15-25.

To his credit, he did say it looked polished. Perhaps around $20 or so.

He did say it looked polished, but only after I ask him why it looked so much brighter than the other FEC's that he was selling. He wanted $35 for the coin but I talked him down to $30. I knew that it was cleaned but wasn't sure how because there were no scratches or rub marks. But this was by far the nicest looking FEC and the cheapest in the building. I guess I overpaid, but I didn't buy it to make money off of it. I bought it cause I thought it would look nice in my coin album. =)

The coin is too worn to show this much "luster"...yes, it has been polished or whizzed.

The coin does have the look of a polished coin but I have never seen a polished coin have the kind of "luster" that this one has. The "luster" looks a lot like whizzing.

Doesn't "whizzing" Cause brush marks or scratches? Because I don't really see any with the loupe. It does have a lot of luster. that is what was throwing me off. The only thing I could think of is that it was dipped?

Whizzing should leave scratches. I am not completely sure that your coin is whizzed since you say that you don't see any scratches but from what I can recall all the coins that I have seen in person and in pictures that have this kind of luster have been labeled as whizzed. The overdipped and polished coins that I have seen all have this uniform shine and not the "cartwheel luster" that your coin has.

That "cartwheel", which shows up on the pictures...which shouldn't be present on a circulated coin...is indicative of hairlines/scratches however minute--imo. It could be the result of whizzing, wiping, or buffing.
