Here's another odd nickel... I was again thinking PMD, but it's common to see a loss of detail in this area due to weakish strike - could this just be an extremely weak strike?

My first impression is that this coin just got its high spots worn off from being in machines. It probably spent some time in a casino.

By, wait for the experts to post. I'm just guessing.

The obverse is actually somewhat dished in the center area, so it's not just wear.

This nickel was struck on an abnormally hard planchet. This is the fourth example I've seen bearing the date 1983-P. Several different die pairs are involved.

Ooooh, cool, sounds like a keeper. I double checked the weight on this one too, to be sure it wasn't defaced, and it does weigh in right on the nose 5.00 g within 1/100th of a gram.
Rest in Peace
