What is the first coin you ever purchased/ deliberately collected?
Mine: 5th grade, paid a fellow classmate $3 for a "rare silver" 1943 war penny he found in his dad's closet.

The first coins I remember putting aside were a small stack of wheaties I found at a payphone. After collecting coins from circulation the first coins I purchased were a Franklin half from a friend for $5 and my 1909vdb from a coin shop for $4.75

A 1956 Canadian Silver Dollar. My Dad gave it to me on my 10th birthday in 1966. Just love the image of the Indians in the canoe on the reverse. Still looks brand new.

I started as a kid so I can't really remember what coin I started with. However, I started metal detecting last year and I clearly remember the first old coin I found. I was hunting at the beach after a big storm and dug up a 1926 SLQ. It had sand fused to it so it took me a while to figure out what it was, but once I did and once I got the sand off of it I was really excited. A couple days later at the same beach I found a 1910 Barber dime. They may be common dates and in rough shape, but it was still a thrill to find them, especially when you realize someone dropped them on that very beach probably 80 years ago or more, and I was the first person to see them since.

My first coin? An 1826 George 1V shilling in Fine condition. My father was asked to pick a combination lock on a safe that was owned by the business that employed him. I was standing next to him as he picked the lock. The coin was inside. He gave the coin to me. That was in 1958. I still have it!
The first coin that I bought was a Roman Denarius of Antoninus Pius, with modius and corn ears reverse, in VF. That cost me $4.50, in 1963.

A 1972 Lincoln Cent my dad gave me from change at the hardware store. It had a large 7 counterstamped to look as if Lincoln was smoking a pipe, it got me started on saving weird looking money, Canadian and an ocassional Brittish coin before I finally got a bag of wheat pennines for Christmas one year along with a book and a coin prices magazine.

Mine was an UNC 1991 ASE. I started late in life as I was 18 or 19 at the time.

Although the first coin I thought was worth collecting was the 1967 centennial Canadian one cent (didn't know much about coins at the time), the first coin I bought was a AU or so 1962 Canadian dollar.

First coin that got me into collecting was a 1885-O Morgan. It was the only coin of any real value I had then.

1920 Canadian One Cent (the first year that the Canadian small cent was minted) ... I remember my Mum took me to the coin shop and I spent my birthday cash on the coin (good memory)
=> yup, that lil' brown beauty started my penny collection rollin' along (and amazingly, 40 years later I am still plugging the current year's penny into that same old rickety album)
