I am starting a folder of 2000 - 2008 Sacagawea dollars. When I get dollars at the bank all I seem to find is 2000 & 2001 dollars. I see the mintage of 2002 - 2008 is much much less. My question is were the latest dollars released for circulation or are they like the newest Kennedy halves only made for collectors

The Sac dollars for years from 2002-present were only available in mint sets or by direct order from the US Mint. Thus, it's not likely you'll find them at the bank.

They can occasionally be found in bank rolls even though those years are NIFC but they will also usually have the ugly black spots and fingerprints from circulation/handling

I'm a big small dollar circulator. You will never find used golden coins worth keeping. Once these hit circulation, nearly all numismatic value is lost. The reason behind this is the super sensitive metal which tarnishes if you look at it the wrong way. I wish they'd change the metal content- but seeing as how they've totally blown it in marketing these coins- I think its too little too late. If you want to collect Sacs for long term benefits- I'd recommend buying slabbed examples. Hopefully, the inert holders will slow down the tarnishing process.

If you're going through the hassle of looking through bank rolls though, might as well look for an example of the Prototype Reverse "Cheerios" dollar. It doesn't matter what grade or condition that one is in, it would be worth your time. there are roughly 4,000 or so unaccounted for.

If you haven't been there, check out http://www.smalldollars.com/. There is a lot of good information there.

Yes.

But they aren't "seen", because they don't circulate very well.....most banks don't order them, but some do still order the Presidential dollars for their customers.

Two easier ways to acquire them.

Order the annual Uncirculated Mint Set from the U.S. Mints website. (for the new ones and each year to stay current in the future.)
http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10211
You can buy the "Two Roll Sets" here too....but they're expensive.

Find a coin shop in your town, they can all be acquired cheaply.

I'd suggest getting an "album" instead of a folder, if you think you'll want to include Proofs and/or Satins in your collection.
Plus, they may not fare well in a folder.....spotting, toning, etc.

The "Sacagawea's" stopped in 2008.....but the same coin was re-named "Native Dollars" and continued in 2009, 2010, 2011, and beyond with a new reverse each year depicting contributions of Native Americans.

Only once I've come across an NIFC Sacagwea, when someone deposited a roll of 2003-P's at a bank. If you want 2002-2008 Sacagaweas, you'd probably have to buy the mint sets or buy them individually from a coin shop.

NOTE: Buying the mint set will only get you the "Satin Finish" Sacagawea and Native American dollars for years 2005-2010. The BU finish coins were only available by ordering rolls direct from the Mint or if your bank special ordered them for collectors.

Starting in 2011, the BU coins are in mint sets again and the Satin Finish was no longer produced. I have a complete set of Sacagawea/Native American Dollars on the NGC Registry, if you care to look at the pictures. You can see the difference in what the Satin Finish coins look like versus the BU strike coins of the same year and mint mark. See set here: (http://coins.www.collectors-society...SetID=116023).

@brg5658- what a beautiful collection of golden dollars you have. And that was good advice about the differential between SF and Business Strike coins. IMO gem Business coins will be the keys to this series twenty or thirty years from now- once most of the in raw coins become ugly with tarnish.

Of all the pieces in your collection, which is your favorite?

Banks could order the President dollars from 2007 to date, but they couldn't direct order the Sac dollars at all because they were not made for circulation. They also have not been able to direct order the NA dollars from the Fed. The only way the banks can get the NA coins is through the same direct ship program that collectors use. (Unless they want to bulk order a Ballistic Bag and arrange to pick it up at the mint.)

@Conder101 -- Thanks for clarifying the availability of these dollars at banks. I just know a fellow collector at my credit union did the US Mint ordering and he deposited the unopened rolls he didn't need. The ladies at the credit union knew I would want one, so they always saved one back for me. Thus, I was able to get them at my bank, but in a contorted kind of way. :)

@cc999999 -- My favorite golden dollar is a 2010-D Satin Finish examples graded MS69 by NGC. I own three satin finish dollars of this year and mint mark graded MS69, but this one is above and beyond the others. It is the closest example in my collection to perfection. It's actually not in my NGC Registry set of golden dollars including MS strikes, but is in my set of Satin Finish coins only set (http://coins.www.collectors-society...SetID=120556). To me the Satin Finish golden dollars are just stunning.

I've attached a pic below of my favorite. :)

@brg5658- Now THAT's what I'm talking about. I think the 2010 reverse is the most beautiful "commemorative" reverse on a circulating coin, and definitely the best looking Sac ever made. I love the rims on your coin- in my experience in this series- even if you find a stunning coin with great surfaces, no bag marks or scratches in the fields- you will always find something wrong with the rims. Your coin looks perfect!

A few weeks ago I was sitting at my desk at work and I heard an unusual clanging from the cash registered. the reigster is already full of coins from me trying to dump some of my roll searching leftovers so I went over and popped it open and there was a sealed N F String roll of 2008D Andrew Jackson dollars and 13 loose 2011D Sac dollars. I scooped them up right away as I'm sure my boss would have accused me of dumping them in there anyways.

The only Sac. reverse that I'm NOT a fan of.....is the "Corn Planter".
It's just boring.
I know the importance of corn historically.....but I just don't like anything about that design. I won't bother with alternate suggestions because it doesn't matter now.....but YICK !

I do like next years design ! Might be my favorite. Once it's in-hand we'll see.....but the renditions look pretty cool !
The horse and the A.I. in the head-dress. (If this is the one they're going with.

I'm hoping for a bank roll of next years design to be stumbled upon at some point !
Of course I'll continue with the Dansco Native Dollar Proofs & Business Strike taken from the Mint & Proof Sets...and I'll get the P&D roll set from the Mint....but if I can nab that extra bank roll......I'd be cool to hand some out, to just "show" people.....gifts too maybe. Whatever.....but these are less "circulated" than the Prez. dollars. They're just not "seen".....
Your average person is completely unaware of the yearly changing designs on these.

I actually received a 2007-D Sacagawea from $10 worth of dollar coins I bought at a bank today.
