Found this on ebay listed as a "Thick Dime". It's a dime struck on a dime sized planchet punched from quarter stock. The finish on the coin is interesting, but I don't know what would have caused it, unless the planchet had not been properly annealed and it was too hard.

Anyone have any other ideas of what would cause the odd surface?

I won the coin at the last second of the auction.





Here's a normal dime at the top and the quarter stock dime at the bottom. The reeding on the thick coin is very sharp. You can see it on the photos of the obverse and reverse.

@ kevro, I love the 1823 Capped bust! F-12 and is a pretty tough date! Cool coin.

I like the look of that 1883-S - nice honest wear and patina!

@Yokozuna, looks like a normal dime to me.... I found one that was the same... I weighted it and it was the same as any other dime.

Anyone else find it odd that the 1892 Columbian Exposition Halves and 1892 Barber halves have nearly identical mintages, and yet I can pickup an uncirculated Columbian for $30, but a Barber of the same grade will cost me several hundred dollars. I imagine that since the Barbers circulated more heavily, the higher grades must be much harder to come by.

Picked this one up last week. I adopted 5 more of it's siblings and they should be here next week. AU58/MS62 WLH's have caught my interest lately.
