This is a recent roll-hunting find - far and away the best looking War Nickel I've found, lots of luster under some light toning.

I think the lack of steps has more to do with a weak strike than wear (also notice weakly struck "E PLURIBUS UNUM").

Looks to be AU53 or on a good day AU55 to me. The lack of steps has to do with the condition of the dies and not so much strike quality. The dies could be worn from use and/or maintenance and/or filled in some places with compacted minute metal particles and grease and dirt.
Look to see if you have a P over P rpm there. Looks like one maybe.

Hmm, just looked at it again, I didn't see anything that looked like an RPM.

That alloy was tough to get a crisp strike out of in the first place. Off these pics, it's at least AU. Nice find.

amazing coin all the War Nickels I find are almost blackened and very worn
