I have one last $50.00 Gold piece in my collection. It's a 2006 Proof Buffalo. How many folks would prefer to have a 1909 S VDB Lincoln or a 1922 no D Lincoln, than this $50.00 Gold piece ? In other words...would you sell it to buy one or the other? What would make "you" happier ? I'm just contemplating this.......I may have to sell the Gold Buffalo for other reasons anyway.....but this is something that's been in the back of my mind for awhile now. With Gold being close to $1,800.00 an ounce now.....this could buy a pretty nice grade '09 S VDB or '22 no D.....or even just get one on the "low end" and have the extra money. Just curious...... What would "YOU" do ? .........

I would sell the gold in a heart-beat. I don't find bullion to be of any interest to my numismatic collecting. I know a lot of people collect ASE and AGEs, but I find them boring. Just my 2 cents... Though, I'd probably buy a Matte Proof 191X Lincoln Cent before either of the two you mentioned.

Gold is inflated right now, IMO. I don't see any long term value in maintaining it. Coins that have numismatic value beyond the metal are going to do ok- but I see gold being dumped when everybody and their mother tries to bail out of the sinking commodities market. I think its the year 2006 for gold hoarders.
For the record, I moved about $32,000 in gold coins when gold first hit $1600 an ounce. I don't think twice about it. The only gold I own right now is a Rolex Daytona... and I'd move that for the right price.

Realistically, the gold you have wont be as much as a 1909 s VDB in 5 years time. The 1909/1922 will retain its value over gold in the long run and personally will be way more fun to look at. Ironically, the buffalo is one of my more favorite gold pieces so I kept mine but I've gotten rid of most of my gold and plan on getting it back later when gold cools off.

You know, we both have a difficult time selling anything, but I would probably trade that gold in for a 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent or 1916-D Mercury dime. Of course, I have no gold to trade, so this is purely hypothetical.

At least take the first step....if I had gold bullion, I would sell it to acquire some classic gold, more specifically a nice AU $3 princess!

I'm not a huge Lincoln fan, but if I were to change the question to a more general "would you change modern gold for an old coin of similar value" I'd give a qualified yes. The history aspect of coins is a major reason I like this hobby so I'd rather have a piece of history instead of something designed with collectors in mind. I consider modern gold and silver coins to be little more than fancy looking bullion. The qualified part of my response is that I think gold still has a way to go up in value. I suspect it will top out in the $2000-2500 range. So right this moment I would probably sit on a modern gold coin then sell when I thought it was near its peak.

WoW ! .... I really didn't expect 100% of the responses to be for selling the Gold Buffalo ! This is such a popular design........with me too. But, I think I "do" agree with this overwhelming opinion. Now, if I just don't have to sell it to pay bills..... I'm going to start a poll to see what the majority would say to "even trade" for with this Buffalo.
