For kicks, wife got the whitman books for 1938 to current for nickels...and I got $250 in nickels, two boxes, and 25 additional rolls. Bank was very kind, insured that they were mixed date rolls. We have about $50 left to look through, but so far, 1 War Nickel, and 0, that's right.... ZERO 2009 nickels. The wife is happy though, as she is the one that found the War Nickel, a 1945.... I knew that the 2009 was low mintage, but figured that one would have popped up before now.....

I don't want to rain on your parade, but a lot of people here would consider finding one silver nickel in $250 to be a GOOD day.

So, on your $250 investment, you have already made a profit 1 War Nickel is currently worth about $1.95 in silver, so you have made a profit of $1.90 don't spend that all in one place

I bought some BU rolls on the Internet of 2009 P and D and kept the best few for myself after looking through the fairly rough looking lots. Luckily, I have a P & D that can blend into my set along with the others and not take away from it. Most were somewhat booger-ed up under magnification. In 2009, I believe I read someplace that the bulk of these nickles were being held in reserve, in storage behind the many 2008 nickels that were not even released yet. Perhaps the majority of 2009 P nickels still sit in storage? The D's seem to be more available. The prices of BU rolls has decreased on the retail market to under $20.00. I would bet that most of those released are in collections or hoards. Will the rest someday hit the general circulation at some point or have they already been scarfed up, I don't know? I compare this with the 1950 D nickel where it was well known there were low mintage and the collectors kept every one of them they could find. A reason why the 1950 D nickel is easier to find in BU rather condition than circulated. The 2009 P and D nickels though, will not ever become the classic that the 1950 D nickel is since there were probably 10 times as many minted. They are as common as most pre 1960 nickles. Just where are they? I don't know. I have never found a 2009 nickel in my change yet. If you like to search boxes of nickels, eventually you will probably run across them in rough condition. If you are fussy about each and every nickel and the condition, you will be better off probably buying one of each for your set. There are 5 different 2009 US Jefferson nickels in all. P and D BU, P & D satin finish from Mint Sets and the 2009 Proof.

2009 nickels are exceedingly rare in circulation. I have searched through $2,000+ and to date I have found 6. 5 of those were all in the same batch.

I've searched through 60+ boxes and found exactly 2 2009-P's. To give you some perspective, I've found 1 1950-D, 1 38-D and 1 39-D and those have much lower mintages. Yes, 2009-P's are VERY tough to find. Found about a roll of 09-D's but only because I live in Denver!

I've searched through about 44 boxes in nickels and I've founds several rolls worth of 2009-P and about a dozen 2009-D. They're not scarce, just not well distributed geographically.

finished off the last of the 250 in nickels, still no 2009, but the wife did find a second War Nickel! She's all sorts of happy about that, a 42S, and a 45P.

I believe 2009 nickels were sparsely released in certain areas (for no good reason other than that's where they were ordered and shipped). There are some areas of the country where even now 2009 nickels would be scarce...and other areas where they are quite a bit more common.
Same story holds true with dimes from what I hear.

I don't do as much roll-searching as some, but here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, 2009 nickels and dimes are very very scarce. In the last 12 months, between roll-hunting and checking my pocket change, I have found 3 2009-D nickels and no 2009-Ps. I'm not sure I've ever seen a 2009 dime around here at all.
2009 cents and quarters are slightly less rare, but not much.

I'd be willing to bet that you've probably looked through more nickel rolls than I have - the majority (but not all) of my nickel-hunting is through pocket change. I see 2010's and 2011's all the time (mostly D's of course), just not 2009's.

Ok I toss the newer nickels into a separate jar as keepers. So I just looked and I have a 2007 P and a 2011 P just from pocket change. I do have a bunch of the different 2009 til present Lincoln Pennies. But I am here in Pittsburgh pa. So I do expect to see the P mint marked coins here.
