I found this during a roll search. The date seems very bold compared to others. Is this common or a PMD?

Well, PMD is post mint damage.. so that doesn't make much sense, there's damage all over the coin, none of it making the features stronger. Sorry. Still a nice '44 s.

I thought it might have taken a hit on the date to give that squash look at some point in time which is why I thought it might be a PMD.

Note how the left side of the mint mark is wider than the right side. The coin has taken a few hits from circulation and widened out the devices. This often happens to circulated coins.
