Never thought to much about attempting to fill my Whitman Classic Album for Large Cents. So at a coin show last Sunday I started to look around for some decent prices on them to start filling that Album. Found one dealer that had a large selection of Large Cents for decent prices and sat down to talk to him about them. He noted that my Album was just a year date Album since it couldn't possibly house all the types and varieties. Only having 25 of the possible 64 coins in that Album, I thought it would be easy to fill. This particular dealer was a Large Cent Collector himself and filled me in on the possble thousand varieties and types of that coin. He mentioned he has several blank Albums full of them and no where near complete.
Sort of enough to scare me away from that type of coin or at least for now. I'll still try to fill that Whitman Album but I'll never try what he is doing.

I'd love to see pics of the album so far. I like the big coppers.

I'm just going to assemble a date set. You can get as involved (or not) with varieties as you want to. There are guys who are just assembling a set of the varieties of the 1794 Cent.

Sounds good Carl. Old copper is my main interest with emphasis on Colonials and Draped Bust coinage.
Man, would love to see some pictures!

I would feel silly photoing such a small amount. A coin show this weekend so I'll try to get enough to make it look like a collection. Only 25 of the possible 64 makes it really look empty. I usually start an Album when I have enough to make it look like an Album. This one sure has pages that look lonesome. Long way away to that next coin show so hope I can get some more of them.
One thing about Large Cents. There really aren't any cheap ones like with Indian Head or Lincoln Cents.

No one says you have to collect all the varieties. You will find just finishing that date set to be tough enough. Be glad that if it is a date set you only need one 1793.

Once you get close to finishing it I would invite you to try doing the varieties of some if the middle dates. They can be challenging, but as a group they are easier than the early dates, and easier to identify than the late dates. Don't try to do the entire series, just pick a year and build the variety set for that year. (don't pick 1822, 1830, or 1834) Some years are tough, some are easy. Some have a lot of varieties some have only two. If you find you enjoy the challenge you can keep selecting another year to work on. If you get most of the middle dates you can try some of the early or late dates.

I've done 1816, 1817, 1820, and 1829. I have partial sets of some other middle date years. I also have 254 of the 295 early date varieties. (I did the early dates first) Large cents can be a lot of fun and and as easy or challenging as you want them to be.

Not sure what you mean by FUN. At the last coin show the cheapest Large Cent I could find was $18. And that one looked like it could have been made by Cave Men, millions of years ago. Challenging a collection I can see. Could easily go blind trying to figure out some of the differences in many of them. Amd as that one dealer pointed out, sometimes the obverse is the same but the reverse is different. And just noticed my 1807 has the reverse 180 degrees rotated. This is going to be a real challange.

I have been trying to complete a date set from '16 to '57 mid and late dates on G-VG for a long time, since I am a casual collector with limited coin money and will go months or years without buying a coin I won't buy an album as I know Ill never fill it. Maybe when I get closer to the number of coins needed I will but all the albums feature early dates I will Never be able to get. Like you I have about 25 coins so far, a long road ahead. Rather keep them in flips or buy blank pages for my dates in particular. I dont try to collect a series for this reason too, there are always key's Ill never be able to buy so why have an album always with a empty hole in it, kills me. Eve in low grades plan on spending 25 to 50 bucks for most of them. I too love old copper, just something about the Large Cent and Half Cent series that I love. History.

I'm going to complete one series at a time. Currently, it's the Draped Bust LC's. I'm actually on the lookout for a 1799, lower grade to fill the hole. Tom Reynolds is keeping his eye out for me. Like others, I am just doing a date set...I really don't care about the varieties although I do have the 1800/798.

I really enjoy the large cents. I agree that a date set is an accomplishment in itself aside from all the varieties. I have 1794 through 1856 minus the 1799, 1804, and 1809.

I'm in full agreement with this as corrosion and soft copper make collecting some of these in higher grades so expensive. I have a few that look like they have been through a meat grinder (ok maybe that's an exaggeration). I upgrade as budget allows me and then sell the lower grade.

I'm of the opinion that along with Colonials, they are definitely the most FUN! They're awesome! Really interesting pieces of history, all with their own unique character.

Yes, they are expensive, but that's what makes finding killer deals and showing them off so enjoyable!

Are you going for any kind of grade set, or price set?

Best of luck to you, Carl. =) I've got some scroppers I could part with, so let me know if theres anything you need. =)

I have a feeling once you really get into it, you'll find it's pretty enjoyable. Of course, as with any hobby, the best part of collecting large cents is the people you meet!

VERM - there's a guy on ebay from Florida (okay, that doesn't narrow it down) but he's had a few low grade '99's... let me find his name for ya. =)

Odd you should mention the people you meet. As I mentioned earlier, at a coin show the dealer I purchased some from was so knowledgeable about the Large Cent. He really talked my ear off about them. One of the most talkative dealers I've ever met at coin shows. Most will talk to you but few will almost not let you get away as this guy did once he found out I was interested in his favorite coin.
With several coin shows in my area per month, numerous coin stores, I'm sure I could eventually find a great amount of these but those prices are scarry.
When you consider most other collections, such as Mercury dimes or Lincoln Cents, there are so many a person can get for a few dollars. BUT with the Large Cent, all are rather expensive.
Wonder what it would be like to have a complete date set all in MS grades.

I stuck with the Dansco 7099 album. Still pretty tough, and I don't have any of the 1793s (Conder, I'm totally jealous!).

If it's not ruining the OP's original thread (if it is, please email me and I'll cease & desist!), here's a link to my Photobucket Large Cent collection:
