http://www.ebay.com/itm/33063706632....m1497.l2649Did I do OK with this purchase? I thought I was throwing a low bid out there and was surprised when I won the auction. It's the first 1932 D that I have ever bid on and now I am getting a little worried that maybe the deal isn't so great after all. I know the condition of the coin isn't great, but heck, it's a 1932 D!

You did VERY good.
I would send it to ANACS for slabbing if you do not collect the Washington series. If you do collect the series, now you have a coin for that spot. Great bid!

The surfaces don't look natural, but not a bad buy.

Good price! But it looks like a harsh polishing was given from all the hairline scratches.

Get it slabbed. But do that no matter what. That way you know its authentic. Mine is slabbed and I have a piece of paper in the Dansco with the info on it. If I could find a cool fake quarter to hold the spot, I would do that.

That's a great pick up for less than $50.

Thanks everyone for helping to reasure me that I did make a good purchase. I do have a Washington set that I work on from time to time so I do not plan on having the coin slabbed.
Why do so many people think I should mail it out to be slabbed? The coin is coming from a good size dealer who sells a lot of coins. He also does have a 7 day money back guarantee so I can return the coin if it is obviously fake. I admit that I am not that good at grading coins so I might not be able to tell the difference anyway. If I did get the coin slabbed and it turned out to be a fake, it would be past the 7 days so I would be stuck with the coin anyway. I think I will just put the coin in a 2X2 until I buy the nice Dansco album at some point. In this instance, I just don't see the point in having the coin slabbed when I am just going to bust it out again in the future.

I have no reason to think the coin is fake, but I would like to see better photos. Once you get the coin you can take your own photos and post them here. Obviously, your being able to see the coin in hand gives you an advantage. Personally, I would not buy this coin without seeing it first; however, given the price you paid and the return policy, I feel you did good and have minimal risk.

I am not sure either but I see it on every 32-D and 32-S I have seen, but all I have seen are lower grades. I think the dark area is a sign of a real 32 Quarter. Hope someone corrects me if I am wrong about that.

I think it was on Pawn Stars, someone wanted to sell a 1932-D or a 1932-S Quarter (Can't remember which one) and they said it was fake because of the dark spot around the mint mark (They said someone had added the mint mark). I am not saying this coin is fake, I am just curious.

My guess the dark around the mint mark is where the dirt didn't get removed when it was cleaned. But for the price I think you did well.

And that says how much those morons on pawn stars know about coins. That is simply crud down around the mm. The mm is actually fair decent relief, so it gathers gunk around the base. That is certainly NOT a defining trait that makes it a fake.
As for the grading. Get it graded to know its genuine, thats all. I have said this before, I personally like to get my keys graded. But thats just me.

In the PCGS guide book they say that one of the best ways to tell a real 32 D from a fake is if it retains die polish on the reverse. Apparently the Denver coins had a lot of die polish while the Philadelphia coins (which the fakes would be make from) lacked it. Not sure if the dark area in the pictures would be related to that.
