Looking at he prices on ebay for the chronicles set, it looks like these sets have not managed to keep the value that they had right after they went on sale back in 09. Most of the Buy it Now prices are so high that no one is purchasing them and the ones that are being bid on do not go very high. (One right now has a few days left and is only at $36.) What happened?

It's been my understanding that the L,C,& C Set has maintained a "sold" price, averaging around $125.00 - $150.00.
Which is "much" more than the original issue price.

Holding this Set back, IMO, from being more interesting, was the fact that the four Proof Coppers and the Proof Lincoln Silver Dollar could be bought separately.
The only "selling" point really......was the packaging.
I have a couple of these Sets....and I certainly enjoy them.....but the Mint should have put something in there to make this Set "special". (similar to the 25th Anniversary ASE Set maybe).
I also have a couple of the Proof Lincoln Silver Dollars....and several Sets of the Lincoln Copper Proofs.
So really.....why "should" there be much interest and/or "demand" for this Set ? ....

But.....it is what it is....

I just searched the recent completed listings. The low was $114.50 and the high was $145. I say it is still doing very well.

If they had put a w mint cent in there or proof zinc cents and it would have done wonders to the values and they could have increased the mintage twenty fold and still had a sell out. I think the whole thing was very poorly managed.

I agree that they should have done something more special.

Can you imagine what the value of a 2009 Wheat cent would be? Or a zinc cent? Or hell, what about a GOLD 2009 S Wheat cent with VDB on the reverse?

The C&C should have had a unique 95% copper 2009-S VDB uncirculated Cent
(in addition to its five Proof coins) and a mintage of 484,000.

There is one significant problem with these wants of zinc proofs, W mintmarks, Wheat cent reverse, or gold composition- they all would have required Congressional legislation. The Lincoln Bicentennial legislation specifically authorized collector versions to be minted in the original bronze composition but it did not allow for all the other scenarios. Since the US Mint is not allowed to make unilateral decisions regarding design and composition changes, the other ideas never had a chance of happening.

That's what I said too....it would have been a HUGE deal and a monster sellout. It would have been THE collector coin of the century. However, to get it done we'd have a have a congress with brains. LOL

Interesting how different people can look at the same numbers & come to opposite conclusions. From where I sit the set hasn't done well at all. Holding the set beyond the "boom days" has resulted in a decrease in value.

The original U.S. Mint cost was $55.95 in Oct 2009 (according to my order receipt).

There are lots of people who hold out till the last few possible seconds to try and get the lowest possible price they can. I believe that it is called SNIPING. I should know, I am one of them!

trdhrdr007, I thought the same thing. That's what I was trying to get at with this post. I remember prices skyrocketing right after the mint was sold out but now prices have tanked. Still higher than what it cost to purchase a few years ago but not as high has they were when sold out.

It is still a good profit for anyone wanting to sell theirs (I am not one of those people, I bought it for keeps).

Sure, there are those that made a lot more flipping it during the first few months, but still being able to double or triple your money is nothing to scoff at.

I remember when the C&C set was first offered I already had proof versions of both the cents and the dollar. So I said "why should I get this set". There is nothing new here. I would bet that many others who would want this set already had the separate coins also. Many popular coins/sets rise quickly in price soon after issue only to settle down later. Sometimes to less than the original issue price. I hope that doesn't happen with this one.

I am still waiting for the 1999 silver proof set to get back down to the price of the others. Still waiting. Still waiting...

The zinc proofs would not have needed it. The mint already had authority to make those. They had to have the legislation to make the copper ones but that didn't take away their authority to make zinc ones as well.

The online dealer I used still shows a 2009 Lincoln Chronicle BU set in two 3x5 holders (P&D) for $9.95 + s&h.

EDIT - apparently I was mistaken on what I had and what a Lincoln Chronicle set refers to.
