I have a coin that I have some questions about. It's a LARGE broad-strike at 30mm at the widest point. the front has a large indent and I thought it was just the brokage of the second coin that caused the indent. Now I can see that it's not a brokage, but the details of the reverse die showing through the thin center of the coin. Using Photo Shop overlays, I've found that the reverse monument is showing through to the obverse. You can even see the seated Lincoln in the center column showing on the front of the coin. While most of the date is missing, I can tell with about 90% probability that the date is 1990. The 0 is easy to see and the 199 is difficult, but I see most of it in the overlays. The obverse image of Lincoln is easy to make out as well as the reverse details. I've posted before it before, but I've been looking at the details and found it's not what I thought. The coin has been twisted with many of the details pulled to the outside of the coin. A good example is the FG on the reverse. The F is still near the monument but the G has been pulled and twisted away to the edge of the reverse. Has anyone else seen a coin so thin in the center that the other die details can be made out? I've never paid much attention to errors... and I don't really have anything to add, other than...
THAT THING IS AWESOME!

looks like a capped die that was partially obstructed by another coin to me.It also looks like a pretty valuable one because of the unique shape and circumstances.

I sold a reverse cap die a few weeks ago for $110 and tried to sell this coin for $125 about 3 months ago. I had it listed as a brokage, but I now see that it's not. I'm not sure what price I would ask for this coin now. It's not like any error coin I've seen. With the reverse details showing through on the obverse, I'm not even sure of what to call this type of error.

Send it to a TPG. They will figure it out. I think slabbed would bring a higher premium.

Looks like a die cap to me, too bad there isn't a date showing on it.

Quote: Looks like a die cap to me, too bad there isn't a date showing on it. The date is there. It's flattened and distorted, but I'm almost sure it's 1990. The final 0 is there to see in my 6400 X 6400 Photo Shop copies and I'm sure that a TPG could pick out the remaining numbers. Now if PCGS can see the date too, I'll have it made!

It's a broadstrike with a large indent. Ram pressure was a bit higher than normal or minimum die clearance unusually small. In either case, the resulting increased effective striking pressure thinned out the area beneath the intrusive planchet, allowing a faint ghost image of the Memorial to bleed through from the reverse die.

Thanks for the information, Mike! I would like to have it graded not only to see how they list the error, but for the grade.
My wife thinks it too nice of an error to sell, so I'm keeping this one for a while.
I'll let you know how it comes out when I get it graded.

The "professional" grading of error coins is about as accurate as throwing darts blindfolded. There is little, if any, relationship between the condition of a coin and the assigned grade. I've seen many horribly damaged error coins given lofty mint-state grades (MS-64 and higher) and unblemished, uncirculated error coins given grades of AU-58. But if you want to throw your money away, that's your business.

Mike, I sold this coin on ebay without having it graded. I put it up for $425, I got an offer and countered at $325.00 and sold the coin. I'm glad I didn't have it graded, because I'm sure that the price wouldn't have been any higher with a slab and grade, no matter what the certification was. Thanks for saving me some money! Ben
