I currently have a harshly polished G 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece in my 7070. It's one of my upgrade holes. Always looking. Budget up to $150 some day. My questions: anybody else find this a tough one to fill? And any other Twenty Cent hunters appreciate the linked item, even though the price seems maybe 20% high to me for the grade (toning premium?)? Just sharing because I see so very few I like.

Well, the one I currently have in my 7070 album doesn't show signs of harsh cleaning (as far as I can tell), but the details aren't nearly as nice as I would like:

I recently went to a coin show in an attempt to upgrade some of the coins in my 7070 album and completely forgot about this one! Perhaps I'll make it my next upgrade project, but I don't expect to find one I like for under $150.

Here's the one in my 7070. This is one of the few coins I knew I would upgrade when I bought it. It was cheap enough that I figured I could resell for what I paid when I upgrade. The spot on the eagles breast is a planchet flaw.

Twenty cent'ers are not cheap! And will always be in demand, now that I mentioned that, I'm going to go look for one!

Even in "primo" condition, 20 cent pieces are not "easy on the eyes", if you know what I mean.

My set lacks the 20 cent piece too ... because they're pretty much all ugly. I don't know why, but that design doesn't strike well the way it's positioned or something. Miss Liberty always looks like she's got a head like a hawk billed turtle. It's going to be difficult for somebody frugal like me to find an attractive 20 cent piece. I've been watching for several months now.

Its hard to find a problem free coin in circulated grades. Many are cleaned, polished, or are scratched with big Xs. Every once and a while you will find a nice one up on ebay though. Keep looking!

Do you know why the are scracthed with and X? Curious as the one I have is. I would speculate that store owners or people did that back in the day when they circulated so they were mistaken for quarters or somethiong along those lines but would like to know for sure.

I think this was actually one of the first coins I bought for the 7070 album because I had never seen one before I purchased the album. This is the one I purchased for the album

Sweet! I always thought that it was weird that LIBERTY on the double-dimes was raised on the shield, instead of incuse (like most, if not all, of the Seated Liberty series), and the arrows were in the right talon (indicating war?), and the motto "In God We Trust" is not present like other of the period, and the eagle was different, and Liberty's head...the list just goes on and on...

She truly is an odd coin.

I just found one on ebay after doing a lot of searching. I was surprised at how hard it was to find a higher grade coin that was mostly problem free that didn't cost an arm and a leg. I went to one local coin shop and all they had were a couple low grade coins. The other coin shop had one in VF condition that looked good except for a small spot of corrosion. It wasn't that bad and I almost bought the coin, but I realized that what would happen is every time I looked at that coin I would immediately look at the spot. Everything decent on ebay seemed to be $300 or more, but finally about a week ago I found a nice one with a full "Liberty" that I picked up for $180. I'm a fan of oddball denominations so at some point I will probably put together a set of 20 cent pieces, but I'll wait until I have the money to do it. For such a small set you have to sink a lot of money into it to get everything!

I saw a decent one listed as a quarter today on ebay, so that mistake continues to be made even today. It was 165.00, the retail price of the coin in VF, so maybe the mistake was made on purpose to trick somebody who thought they found a steal because it was mis-listed.

I'm not sure, but that does sound reasonable. I did a quick search but I couldn't find anything. We'll have to wait for an expert...

The one I recently settled for, so as not to have to stare at that hole any longer:

I just checked my records, and it looks like I paid about $83 for my Twenty Cent Piece. At the time, that may have been the most I had ever spent on a single coin, but it was basically just a hole filler until I could someday buy a better example. Maybe at next year's Bay State Coin Show...
