I pick up this and other at my local coin show today, it is slightly darker than photoed. Album toning?

I thought it looks appealing for a common date, didn't pay much for it either, says AU on the 2X2, but the camera pick up things I don't see even in my 12X loupe.

nice toning! Could be dipped perhaps, I might be seeing things. [hmm]
The red on Mercury's face makes her seem more real...dont you think?

It probably been lightly dipped, I wouldn't be surprised since a good high percentage of the so called AU dimes has been dipped once or twice in the dealer albums.

The one's I like to buy are with a light gold tint field with little or no toning, and have very little or light marks or no mark would be perfect. I notice these are the type that's not been cleaned and stored in dryer cooler climate.

Mac, I would LOVE to see a guide published with good examples of, not just all the dates and MMs, but also your average lightly struck examples. And which years you are morel likely to find badly struck examples.

The reason I say this is that I recently discovered that most of my WLH's that I have been grading as XF45/AU are in fact MS. I just took a look at the weak eagles breast and weak liberty's hand and blouse and saw wear. It turns out my handfull of, what I termed MS coins, are really very well struck.

And I think the same is happening with the Mercs. Your thoughts?

The Complete Guide to Mercury dimes by David Lawrence will reference which years having poor or weak strikes, as for grades it would be subjective, a low MS coin for you maybe a high AU in my eyes and vice verses.

And many graders in the big 3 TPG are just the same when it comes to the art of grading, you would read posts that many here also would comments on the TPG assigning the wrong grades.

I am more of a varieties and error Mercs collector/investor, over the years I have venture outside of just the business strikes and the proofs.

I have read David Lawrence's book, and it's good, but I think there is room for a lot of improvment. Such as pictures of an MS coin with a weak strike. ect ect.

Its been over 6 years since the last edition. I'd like to see some color in some of the coins, a gallery section with color and more newer varieties, plus comments on how it received such strikes.

These are just some of my suggestions.

In another post I offer putting a Mercury dimes book in PDF format, this would be a tall task and time consuming, as many contributors needed to submit pictures before such process can be made forward.
