Good find! Sadly this is not a particularly rare coin. I would check the back for a mint mark but a 1940 w/ no mint mark is not rare - in fact over 176 million were made! One with a d or s mint mark is worth a little more but not a ton. However this is an old coin so you should hang on to it. Maybe even start a collection of Jefferson nickels! No silver in a 1940.

I keep all nickels 1970 or older. And why not? You don't run across many (with the annoying exception of 1964), and they don't take up much space.
Nice find on the '40. Put it in a Mylar flip or something if it's in good enough condition, otherwise, just toss it in with the other old coins in a Crown Royal bag.

I'm not afraid to admit it: I keep ALL nickels. I seperate all pre-'59s but I keep every nickel I come across, and why not? I'm saving money either way.

to the forums. Like others have posted, the coin is not really rare, unless it turns out to be a D or S mint. The mint mark for the Jefferson nickel can be found on the reverse of the coin, on the right side of the Monticello building. Nickels are sometimes fun to sort through however, as they are about the only type of coin that you can still find in circulation from the 40's and 50's. I have only searched a few boxes of Nickels and when I started I kept every Nickel prior to 1962. I recently changed my thought process and now only keep any older Nickel with a mintage of less that 100 million. Somone is going to be surprised when they pick up a roll of nickels and find it filled with 1957 - 1961 D's.

I agree I have been keeping nickels pre-59 for some years now. I put them in a jar and just hang on to them. If I ever need a few bucks I roll up the later date ones and cash them in.
I agree small start to a savings plan but one none the less.

I search A LOT of Nickels.....when I'm not "on a break"....probably two boxes a week. I come across quite a few 1940 Jeffersons....all usually VERY circulated condition. I just throw them back. They're just worth .05 Cents.
I "used" to keep all pre-1959 Jeffersons....but my "stock" became ridiculous, even though I kept them in coin tubes or larger containers. I have a completed "folder" of Jeffersons (circulated) I have a VERY nice Dansco album with Proofs that I'm working on that only contains high grades, and it looks REALLY sharp.
I recently figured I'd start another "circulated folder" for my daughter.....so now I'm keeping them again, but just enough to do the folder.
Yeah, it's true that it doesn't "cost anything" to keep all the old Jeffersons.....but for me.....there was really and truly just no point to it. It served ZERO need for me, as there's likely never a "future need" for a hoard of these either. Even for my daughter, because they'll be floating around forever.
So, unless it's a key or semi-key...... I THROW EM' ALL BACK TO THE WILD !
(one exception to this is "condition" of course....any nice BU examples are still kept !)

As the others have said not really that rare. The silver nickels are 1942 through 1945 with large mint marks. 1942 issued the cupro nickel coin as well for the beginning of the year. These do not have the large mintmark. I keep all nickels and separate all pre 1960 plus filled collector books. I think nickels are the only coin really not picked through for the most part. In $1400 in nickels I've found many pre 1960, a roll worth of both silver and indianhead as well as some foreign coins
