The mint mark appears to have been damage from a post mint calamity.

reports67, Mr. Neff is one of the best in coin identification. Sure we are not all perfect but, I would go with what he said. This is a great site to learn and ask questions. I'm still new too.

reports67: Are you talking about that small line inside the "D"? If so then it is at best a small die gouge.

No disrespect intended to any one. I just don't know what is laying under the north east part of the penny mint mark.

All I see there is glare from your light. Try another shot with coin rotated 180 degrees.

Okay, I'm a newbie but I think I see what might be the result of Die Deterioration. The MM doesn't look right but it doesn't appear to have been struck twice either. So between the usual wear a coin endures and perhaps a worn die ... maybe you get that appearance.
