Ok, this is just a learning question. I am curious as to what caused the odd damage, on the is beat up 1984 LMC. I'm guessing that it was an extremely stressed or worn die, but maybe PMD.
The odd looking MD on the O and N, actually match the jagged edges of the Letters, and I understand that being MD. But any ideas as to what might have caused the vertical lines in the bays of the memorial? More worn die damage, a defective planchet, PMD from acid, or?
I am by no means an expert...but if I had to guess I would say MD with a very worn die. I feel bad for the poor guy....got dealt a bad hand! lol As for the pillars and bays...Dunno...
John is correct here. There are very heavy die scratches that are worn down from die use which answers the abraded part. The Die Deterioration shows as raised soft outlines around some of the lettering in unprotected areas. It is VERY common on 1982-1988 cents, but shows on later years as well.
Thank you both! I've been doing a bit of reading, trying to learn a bit about the minting process, so that I can better understand the things I'm seeing. It's great to have such a knowledge base here on this forum.
