I have been putting together a Lincoln set from rolls and I decided it was time to visit a coin shop to look at some Lincoln's. The guy who runs it is very nice and even cut me a deal on his bargin bin. I picked up 2 silver War Nickels, a 1944 D Merc, a 1962 proof Jefferson, a BU 1958 D Jefferson and a UNC 1937 Wheatie, all for $7. I also bought a 1909 VDB Lincoln Wheatie, (my first semi serious purchase). Give me a grade and what you would have paid for it.

Very sweet looking 09 vdb. Did he cut you a deal on this as well? Sounds like your other deal was ok. What was the grade on the silver War Nickels?

The War Nickels would grade Good a 1943D and a 1944S, I got them for melt. Now my 1943P War Nickel that I found in change won't be all alone.

very nice vdb. here's my critique. fairly weak strike. a little rub on the cheek. I'd want to take a closer looks at whats going on beneath the G in God. I'm also wondering if that's not a partial fingerprint in the field in front of the face. I'd call it AU55ish. The reverse is very nice. I only see a couple of bag marks, the strike is still a little weak. As with all coins though... pictures don't tell the whole picture, I'd love to see it in hand.

Were I buying it off ebay I'd probably pay somewhere in the $12 to $15 range.

I think AU-53-55. Of course, don't be discouraged if you thought it would grade higher- we are looking at photographs and not the coin. I think I see some wear as well- in the beard, the hair, and the cheek. I'm not going to comment on what I'd pay because that's all relative.

I appreciate the comments. The shop had a grade of MS 63 and a price of $29. I paid $27 and am happy with it. It goes into my collection and I am learning more every day.

a good tip about finding wear. Under magnification wear appears dark and dull. Again, I don't have your coin in hand, but that's the easiest way to tell. get yourself a loupe and look at that beard, cheek, and hair. If it's dull and dark in spots (even if its brilliantly red in luster) it's AU. If it doesn't have that- then maybe it is an MS-63 or higher coin!
