On bays 1 & 2 of this 2002-D Lincoln Cent are 2 large areas of distorted metal..the metal in Bay 1 is quite large, and, fills about 1/2 the area...most likely this is just a bubble, but, wanted to post before sending to the bone pile in case it may be a chunk of metal that has come loose, and, landed there, which would be a lot more interesting. Almost ALL of the gas bubble Zincolns I have had always had a "crater", or, and open spot..these 2 areas do not, and, the linear error in bay 2 almost mimicks a doubled column..probably one of these "must see in hand" situations of course..Mike Diamond may get this...
Thanks
Calvin

Looks like a very large die chip. The die broke apart in that area between the columns, so when the coin was struck, it left a blob there instead of a bay between columns. I've seen several with chips in this location, but I think this is the largest I've ever seen. I'd keep it!

I was going to say that if it was a gas bubble, it was the biggest I've seen and therefore a keeper. But I see there is an explanation, thank goodness.

Nice find.

My thought is it's a die chip. You could take a tooth pick and press on it to see if it dents, if it does then it's a gas bubble. Either way I would keep it and put it in a 2x2. Nice find.

That is the famous Lincoln Memorial hornet's nest The leftmost bay is a point of inherent weakness in the die design, you will see that chip recurring in various sizes across a number of years of production(that one is fairly large). Other points of inherent weakness on the Memorial design are the four corners where you will frequently see die cracks and sometimes you will find one with cracks emanating from all four corners.

I agree with those who said this is a die chip - that's exactly what it is.
